4 Nations Thread

So that was a bummer of a result for Team USA and a victory for Canada that will give continuing momentum to their national pride.

From the Canes perspective, other than tacking on a Slavin or Jarvis game winning goal, last night couldn't have gone better for our franchise. A 3 hour long almost non-stop lovefest for Jaccob Slavin and his absolute greatness. In a game where there were probably more eyeballs watching than there has been for any other NHL event in over 20+ years, the Carolina Hurricanes and our quiet superstar shutdown Dman were mentioned well over a dozen times.

Hard to measure the value of that, but it definitely was a special night for Slavin and the Canes.

McJesus wins it. Bad timing for Hanifin and Fox to be the defense at that time
I thought we were in trouble when Hanifin and Fox took the ice on that last shift. Hanifin was particularly bad last night - he seemed to be a turnover machine. On the other hand, Slavin was unbelievably good. No one on team Canada scored when he was on the ice - I think in both games.

Maybe RBA will see how dominant 74 can be with another shutdown guy. Instead of having to carry around some defenseless defenseman.
Yeah, we've over-loaded the guy for years ... ever since they broke up the Slavin/Pesce pairing to ask him to caddy for Dougie. And hey, to everyone's credit it has largely worked out. Slavin can handle whatever and most of the offensive minded dinguses they've strapped to his side have flourished as well. This season is different because he's literally animating a corpse as a partner, but hey ... you always go one bridge too far. Next season sets up to be different as the Canes shed Burns and Orlov for younger legs.

I dream of pairing him with a shutdown partner and shortening the other teams minutes available to score by 20 minutes per regulation including the best offensive players on the other teams’ minutes. That’s worth more than any offensive contribution we get from a loose cannon D partner.

FWIW, that was about as enjoyable a game as I can remember watching. The pace, intensity and quality were all off the charts. I've got some bones to pick with Mike Sullivan's line shuffles, but honestly ... that pales in comparison to just how much fun it was to watch that game. For the US to generate that level of play with K Tkachuk largely sidelined, their best play driving defender out and some big pieces playing like garbage (looking mostly at Fox, Miller and J Hughes here) is pretty astounding. Big credit to that Slavin/Faber pairing but also to Austin Matthews for the 200' game, to Brady Tkachuk for dialing back the meathead stuff and mostly just playing hockey, and to guys like Guentzel, Larkin, Boldy and Werenski for turning themselves inside out on every shift.
