Around The League - 2016 Playoffs

I would say we've had skill in the draft, but have failed to develop it over the past 2 decades.

It's not normal that only Pleks and Max have graduated as top 6 from our system in the past 10 years.

Actually, it's probably the biggest problem in this organization, and we never seem to talk about it or try to address the issue. We keep blaming UFA missed signings instead....

Past 10 yrs? Try 35 yrs...

Serge Savard's Habs may have won Cups, but he acquired all the offensive talent via trades Bobby Smith, Vinny, Bellows etc.. back when teams dealt talent. Other than Richer & perhaps Lemieux not one offensive talent was "developed" under Serge's tenure, and that was during the high flying 80's when 90 pts was considered an above avg offensive talent.

Grundman 79 draft pick not SS

but did not play for us and become a start until 1983 under Serge. Now I will listen to an argument that we did not develop Naslund because he came over older and fit right into the team, but his success was under Serge and within the last 35 years.

But...but....but the Hawks, TBay....all important Corsi.

These games are precisely why Plekanec needs to be jettisoned, he can never be counted on to deliver when physical engagement is mandatory.

Are we talking about the same Corsi that the two organizations that won 5 of the last 6 Cups dominate in?

That Corsi?

What about it?

It's a statistical measurement not a basis of success. High end skill is an absolute necessity, but without players willing to engage physically one will never win the Cup.

I find it interesting how people overlook Toews' willingness to cheap shot opponents & take cheap shots himself to win, never backs down from physical engagement, in fact goes out of his way seeking it in many playoff games, or how Keith & Seabrook's ability to quietly & efficiently do the dirty deed when needed to an opponent enable them to win physical battles. There's a lot of jam on that Hawks team, they're not a bunch of pansy ass princesses, like the present Habs makeup. U do not win with the number of gutless bastards the Habs have on their roster.

Have said it for years this group of core players isn't winning shit , so real changes need to be made not depth filler pieces of shit we typically make .

You do realize that having a good forecheck and strong work on the boards and in battles is going to lead to good possession stats and good corsi right?

Corsi does measure these things.

What it doesn't give credit for is the useless physicality of a Douglas Murray where he hits people but never gets the puck.

Physicality can be useful, but it has to be the good type of physical play and not just physical play for the sake of it.

The Rangers are a complete no-show and are about to go down 3-1 to Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh right now just might be my SC favorite.

Nice to see those great top 6 leaders making a difference like Staal or the great Ladd. Can't wait to see the fools overpaying this summer.

Only 36 games...

Him and Chuckie don't count...they basically jumped from junior to NHL

After you draft a player your development staff works with them... in summer, and make in-season trips to check up on them. Even if they are with a junior team.

This is what your director of player development does.

Exactly. Which is why I don't buy Bergevin's narrative about how a healthy Price would have made all the difference. Sure, we'd have made the playoffs (which I guess is all management and ownership care about anymore) but we'd have been annihilated by more physical teams, which would be pretty much all of them based on what I've seen. I read that in game 2 of their series against the Penguins, the Rangers had nearly 60 hits (their regular season average was about 25 hits) Does anybody here think that the Habs could ramp up their own physicality like that? I sure as hell don't.

But we have 51 on our side , others don't

Exactly, its a skill issue. We need more skill, and have never had enough of it.

What team have we had with the offensive horses? none since the early 90s. We just don't have the firepower.

Has nothing to do with size and toughness, everything to do with skill.

BS , we don't have enough players to put it all on the line to compete when it matters plain and simple . Expecting this group to somehow turn into playoff warriors is delusional . Some get you to the playoffs , others get you through and we lack those .
