He said gay twice. One was in the penalty box where he said "**** off, gay" and another time on the ice.
Flipping off the refs won't help him, but probably would have gotten him a fine at most.
Speaking of the refs, what in the hell were they doing when they didn't give him a game misconduct after that? Complete incompetence all night from that crew.

I think it's more about the hate speech than the hurt feelings. I highly doubt the ref's feelings were hurt in the slightest.
If I call you a gay when you aren't is it hate speech?
I also don't think the NHL or any league should be policing that. Interesting that the NBA suspended Rondo for saying something similar but they never suspend when one says nigga to another on the court. I suspect the NBA does not want to get into the morass of whether or not old white guys can tell a black man how to use that word.
