Marner had no contract, and no ability to sign anywhere else=Hostage.

Buff not showing up and screwing Winnipeg on the cap=Hostage.

It you're okay with marner being held hostage then you should be just fine with Winnipeg being held hostage.

Now marner had a choice. Could have played in another league for a lot less money.

Winnipeg also had a choice. Could have bought him out and gotten him off the roster and cap relief. Both are shitty options, but if you're okay with Marner being forced to play in a lesser league for less money you should also be okay with Winnipeg being forced to buy out buff.

Marner like all RFA`s with no contract is a completely different issue

He could of held out and sat out and not get paid , its his call

If he wanted to piss away a year`s pay or multiple years ... do it and never get the money back

The other prick was under contract

Walk away and let Peg fix their roster with the cap space , total douchebag move

For this to be a grievance issue , something fcked up with the player

It was all hush hush and no one knew WTF was going on

If its a medical concern you put him on LTIR for the year and move on like other injured players

Your not happy walk away from your deal, terminate your contract and good luck in your future

Being held hostage is being held hostage, if its good for Marner its good for Winnipeg or any other team to be honest.

Frankly, with all the powers teams have, a player sticking it to them on occasions is refreshing.

No offer sheet was coming cause Marner was staying in Toronto and nearly took nearly 11 mil , poor him don't know the fcuk he will pay his bills now

The other option of Davos for 250k was obviously more appealing

no offer sheet was coming because no team was going to offer 4 first round picks. Because no team was going to offer 4 first round picks he was stuck going back to toronto.

If he wanted a different contract, play in a different city, more money, whatever, he can't, because toronto held all the leverage. Hostage.

So yeah, I don't shed any tears when a team gets held hostage by a player. None.

Aho didn't have to reimburse any draft picks. :)

A negotiation is not an hostage situation. Yes, players have little freedom until they reach free agency and then loses it immediately after they sign a contract.

But teams are also stuck with the same contracts. Both Alzner and the Habs would probably like to be free of each others at the moment.

The way the system is set up is fundamentally unfair.both for RFAs and in this case, Winnipeg. But situations like Winnipeg’s are rare and require a player willing to sit around and not get paid. RFAs getting the shaft is far more common.

There is just that year between the end of the entry-level contract and the arbitration eligibility that is truly problematic. Just allow arbitration after 3 years and most of the problem goes away.

Yes, but as the system is currently set up RFA get the shaft. So as of right now, I don’t give a shit that the occasional team gets the shaft by a player
 
No, but here's the thing. It was reported that he didn't show up to camp because of a foot/ankle issue. So, if he really didn't want to play for Winnipeg, he could have claimed it was an off-season injury, gotten paid to rehab and probably skip the whole season altogether if he wanted to. Instead, he's been basically on unpaid leave all season.

Let's say he just really, really wants out of Winnipeg. He could have easily asked them to trade him at the end of last season via his agent. Knowing Bee Foo Glee An, Winnipeg probably could have gotten a lot in return from him.

There's just too many blanks and missing information, which is why the whole thing is so weird and puzzling.

makes perfect sense to me.

If I was wealthy enough to not care about 7 million, and had to choose between Winnipeg trying to get the best return for me or signing wherever the hell I wanted, I would go with the latter all day, every day.
