Around the League: 2019-2020 Regular Season

Given our cap space situation, paying Price makes sense. If it wasn't for his contract we would be sitting on 20M cap space, or Haven an even dumber contract on our hands. He's also the only player on this team actually moving the needle (to use Geeman expression), which is actually a bad thing for tank nation.

Having nearly guaranteed great goaltending is worth it.

If Price contract was preventing us from acquiring or retaining top talents I might reconsider, but that's not the case.

Sure, but frankly, I don't care about the cap situation.

Signing Price was the worst thing this organization could have done to become a serious contender. It single-handedly guaranteed that this organization is going to remain mediocre for a decade. Because Price will always keep this team in the hunt for the playoff without ever making it good enough to contend while making it crappy enough to get good first round picks.

Also, for all of Price's pros, he has been wildly inconsistent throughout most of his career. Hell, the first half of last season, he wasn't very good.

I would have no issue with Price's contract if we drafted & developed like the Tampa Bay Lightning do, but since we don't, we're ****ed.

There is two parts of it. The first is whether he's worth that money. Judging by your response the answer is yes, no other available player could have the same impact as him on the performance of the team.

The second aspect is whether we should have offered that contract to him. If you're in the tank team, that's a big no, at any cost really so the contract barely matters.

But if you're like Molson/Bergevin and you want to be competitive every years or close, then it makes sense to retain him.

He's been pretty consistent since the lockout. He had one bad season, and a bad November last season.

Great post and like you said before , the difference between an elite G and very good is minimal

He hasn't been elite since his elite MVP year , that's my issue

We have gone nowhere in the last 7 years missing multiple playoffs and only winning 3 rounds

Define elite. No goalie is winning an MVP every year or even a Vezina every year.

He was playing at elite level the year after his MVP, except he was injured after 12 games. Hardly his fault.
He was elite in 16-17, Vezina finalist is elite regardless of your standards.
Year after he sucked no doubt.
Last year he was close to elite, top 10 in the league, but I guess that would put him in the very good category.

Teams don't pony up for elite performance every year, they pony up for stability and piece of mind. Other teams rotate goalies every 2-3 years hoping to find one on a good year.

I'm all for moving Price sooner than later...mostly because I want to see a good return for him.

Despite the contract AAV and term I still think there are teams that have been so desperate for elite goaltending for so long that they would pony up a good asset to get Price.

But that window is not going to stay open forever.

It would take a real contender with assets and cap space to spare. Very hard to find.

Clearly the contract to Bobrovsky indicates that. I don't mind the short term cap hit, but I'm definitely not a fan of the term. I hope Primeau can establish himself as a serious pretender in the next 2 years to allow us to explore some trade options.

I think a team desperate enough would find the way to fit him in.

But I don't even think it needs to be a contender although contenders with that need would definitely be interested.

I think it would also be teams starving to get out of the drought of being non playoff teams.

Contender wise I think Calgary would love to add him, perhaps Colorado, put him on the market and I can bet even a team like Toronto makes a call

Teams that are desperate to start winning and make the playoffs regularly Arizona, Vancouver and Edmonton...I would have put Florida in there this year until they got Bobrovski.

But I think there would be takers.

Yeah - gotta think Seattle becomes an option in 2-years, especially if Habs on ice performance shows no progression...

I can’t see Seattle ownership being patient for a 5-6 year build from bottom up approach...call it the VGK effect

Overall patience is wearing thin in a lot of markets and teams want to start winning...you sense it in markets like Florida, Buffalo, Arizona, Vancouver, Edm, NJ etc...

Like VGK, Seattle will become a destination market for players, especially Western / BC boys without the pressure of playing in Canada.

His wife’s from Seattle and it’s a lot closer to home for him as well vs Mtl.

She's from Tri-Cities, still Washington State but not Seattle.

Like I said, I think his first choice would be a place to win the Cup, if not Seattle or Vancouver would be second best.
