Hey, if you lose an Olympics but then continue to show strong in everything else, sure. But when you're consistently losing at every major international tournament for ~4-6 years, you've lost bragging rights as the top dog.

The tankjob wasn't masterful - the Leafs actually finished 1pt better that year than they had the year before. Thankfully they got the lottery luck that year because with no exaggeration the entire leaf rebuild would have failed if they had gotten any other pick in that lottery.

And for every good contract move he made he anchored us to a Marleau or Zaitsev too.

The Leafs in 2015-16 actually finished 15 points ahead of last place Buffalo the year prior and 21 points more than Colorado, who was last the following year. The Nylander callup came very close to costing us that #1 overall and cost him an ELC year used. The biggest reason Leafs were last, Dubas' Phil Kessel trade. We lost the most 1 goal games that season. Leafs were the best 'Last place" team in years.

Did you see the franchise valuation report from the other day? Bettman has helped the owners get filthy richer. They love him and they don't care if every fan thinks he's a douche. Besides, if fans are busy focusing their hate at Bettman they won't pay attention to the owners who tell him what to do. At the end of the day, Bettman is just Jeremy Jacobs' meat puppet.

That's my #1 argument against sending NHL players to the Olympics, especially for Team Canada. There is nothing to play for. If Canada wins gold, it's "Thanks for doing your job." If they lose it's a national catastrophe and people are ready to stick their heads in the oven. Canada can't "win" the gold medal, they can only lose it. And in the end, win or lose, the math never changes. Canada is the #1 hockey nation on the planet, full stop.

his job is to make the owners richer and he is good at that job.
 
If the NHL runs another World Cup, two Canadian teams would be interesting.

Canada East/West
Canada Young/Old
Canada #1/Aces

Hell, put the previous Cup champ teams in the mix.

That gets them back to at least pre-pandemic levels.

2017-18: 4.9
2018-19: 5.1
2019-20: 4.4
2020-21: ???
 
Eh, I don't know how much stock I'd put in anything that is projecting the 2nd half of the NHL season to not need empty arenas again.
