Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Lol I absolutely love this.

Chris Pronger: A lot of people think $30 million USD is a lot over five years. But did you know that hockey players also need to pay taxes and spend money on transportation, food, and a place to live? I bet you didn't think about that.
I love that by the end, he shows that the net take home pay for one year after all expenses is still more that the majority of people will make in a lifetime. And we still have expenses.

wonder if chris pronger factors in the extra wedding bands he needed to buy to replace the ones he lost trying to discretely slip them off while chatting up women in bars.

yeah I get what Pronger is trying to do, he's just going about it extremely poorly. and I think the end result is going to be the opposite of what he intended.

athletes need more financial literacy and support so they don't end up bankrupt a year or two after retirement. this is the salient point.

The other thing of course, is that most of these players retire around 37.

regular people need to work another 30 years after that….and nothing is stopping these players from developing another skill for the second act of their lives

Yeah, these guys can make money off their "fame" after they retire. Even the fringe guys are minor celebs in their home town or the markets they played in. They'll do shitty commercials or sign autographs at a local sporting store. Some will go into broadcasting or real estate... selling cars.

If they just don't absolutely go stupid with their money they can easily live a pretty damn good life without having to bust their asses going forward.

The guys that signed $30m deals could easily never have to work another day in their lives and be very comfortable.

For the record, I believe that athletes deserve to make a shit ton of money and I don't begrudge them a single dollar. Just don't try to tell me that you don't really make that much.
100%. They provide the labour that we use as entertainment. I'd rather them get paid a shit ton than some old dude who fell into family money taking it all.

I also don't begrudge the owners. Not for making money off their investment in a team. Especially the ones that spend to the cap and don't whine about it.

I'm sure that most of them are crooks who made money cutting throats their whole lives.

plus the players do get a pension (if they play enough games)

it was not that long ago that you had all the leagues best players doing "legends games" to get some money

last one i attended had the Rocket as the ref!

a few random thoughts

1 - get the players financial education
2 - this is why i do not hate the players that actually go and get an education
3 - if the CHL provides education for players....why not the NHL for their second careers
4 - just become the owner of the team like Mario - duh
