Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Having a favourite team from a young age is a huge factor in loving any sport and being loyal to a team, I would agree. Gambling is a pretty good way to get into it too. If you couldn't care less about a random mid-season game between the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, put some money on one of them and you will suddenly care quite a bit, lol.

Football is super entertaining, though. Baseball and hockey are my 2 favourite sports, but if I'm going to watch a full game in any sport that doesn't involve my favourite team, it would be an NFL game. You're definitely missing out, LOF.

And baseball is the best sport for fantasy. By FAR.
As weird as this is, after living in LA for over 20 years, if Toronto got a team, I'd probably be interested. So odd that LA getting the team didn't inspire the same feeling. Couldn't care less about that. I've only ever identified with Toronto sports only. Blood allegiance, I guess.

Funny thing is, I played football as a kid and loved it as much as hockey and baseball (never really made much time for basketball).

I used to devote my Sunday to watching football. During undergrad. After undergrad. I think for a time during law school.

Then I lived in America for four months.

And now, I cannot remember the last time I watched even a single snap.

NFL football encapsulates just so much of what is wrong with America, all in one neat little package. Ruined any enjoyment I used to get from it. Price of awareness I guess.
Which is why I said once you get passed the BS. The truth is there is BS in any professional sports league.

I think there is literally no sport that I couldn't get into and enjoy watching. Not necissarily pay attention to like hockey, but just sit down and watch a game. I've got sucked into cornhole on espn before.
And what's the deal with late night poker and why do I get stuck on it sometimes?🤔

I'm pretty with you here. I usually just need some sort of hook. Fantasy did it for football but I find it's usually extraordinary performances that get me into a sport -- someone setting records, some sort of dynasty, an interesting storyline, rooting against "villain" team.

I guess that's why I'm always wishing the NHL would embrace its star power more over pushing a plugger, defensive style. Gimme the skill.

Taking advnatage of gambling promotions and milking them dry is the new version of churning. It is a blast.

I hedge every bet though so I still don't care about the results of the games, but I get the appeal.
you are a very atypical sports fan, I hope you realize.

yeah I cannot get past the NFL's anymore. owners in that league seem to be most closely descended from slave owners in all major sports.

I don't have the time anymore. Went from a four-sport fan to basically NBA/NHL. And even still only watch full games like once or twice each week. And I don't even have any damn kids yet...

I learn this lesson every Olympics. Couldn't care less about curling or rowing events 99% of the time, but when it comes to the Olympics I'm all-in. That's because cheering for Canada is suddenly like cheering for the Leafs.

I know I could get into Premier League or golf or many others, but following the big 4 sports already takes up more than enough of my time, lol.

If Toronto had a team i'd for sure be in on NFL. As a fan without a rooting interest though it's the crazy roster turnovers and players swinging wildly from awesome to useless on a dime depending on what system they're in that eventually killed any interest I had.

But in general football is a perfect spectator sport because it really is a coaching-decision chess match, with fierce action in between. So as a fan you can argue and disagree with coaching play calls in a way you really can't with any other sport.

Ha, I guess I peel down even one more layer. In hockey, where there's actual NHL players or prospects, I'll give a bit more of a shit - not much - when there are tournies like Olympics, WJC, etc. I'll want Canada to win, but I'm not very invested.

As for non-hockey international stuff, I care even less than regular season non-Leafs games. Olympics are torture, just complete unwatchable for me. I remember as far back as grade school when there were school projects based around the Olympics - specifically I recall when Brian Orser and that other Brian were getting a lot of press and the teachers would talk about it in class (like Grade 3 or so) and I was bored to fucking tears. I was like, why in the hell do we care about this?

Used to watch NFL but can't get past how long games are with very little actually happening. Fantasy football has heavily influenced how popular the sport currently is.

Soccer and Hockey for me and I don't really turn on random hockey games.

I remember during the 2010 Olympics, I was home on reading week and came down with pneumonia. Quickly became a big fan of all Olympic sports...

See that's me with hockey and football but my problem is that I'm not just watching my teams.
