Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Let's see.. 2009-10 season.

Kessel misses the first dozen games recovering from shoulder surgery.

Leafs management is convinced that a duo of Toskala/Gustavsson would be playoff calibre - nevermind NHL calibre. To be fair Gustavsson's numbers weren't terrible, but he couldn't stay healthy. The effects of terrible Toskala, and the "Monster" needing constant medical care - was 3rd string Joey MacDonald playing a number of games, and the team needing to spend assets to acquire Giguere at the trade deadline - presumably to just try and not finish last.

The Leafs started the season with an 8 game losing streak, and went on to lose 17 of their first 20 games. Effectively killing their season in the first quarter of the schedule.

Here's the sched, in case you find yourself complaining about any losses in this Matthews/Marner era.

I think we both agree with each other, that it could've gone either way.

But I'm taking one step further back. It was a bad gamble. When TB traded two 1sts for a guy this past deadline, it was a dumb deal, but you can look at it through another lens. They were clearly one of the best teams, coming off back to back championships and going for three. The gamble is justifiable there.

With the Leafs and fucking Grabovski as their 1C and zero in the pipeline and coming off zero playoff appearances, it was a fucking dumb gamble. There's nothing that changes that other than the Leafs becoming an ultra competitive team and proving the Burkie quick retool model. And that never happened, didn't even come close.

The Kessel deal is probably a big reason why teams do go to lengths to protect picks these days. While it wasn't the worst trade in NHL history or anything remotely like that that I'm sure some people attack you for, it shows that a little mis-evaluation of some factors can tank you, and suddenly you're trading a lot more than you thought.

I know at the time, it was the deal that I wish MTL could have done. I think we were a bubble team at the time, and our next 2 first round picks would have been like Beaulieu and TInordi. If you're in that spot, then it makes sense to take some chances. But when you're closer to the first pick than the last playoff spot, you can't take a chance that prays that you are short-circuiting the rebuild.

This all comes down to a regime understanding what the hell they are in the food chain and act accordingly

The Leafs needed to rebuild at that time , not trade 2 lottery picks .

Phil was a solid player but Leafs were not close to winning anything

They traded 2 picks for a 21yr old hall of famer.

Opening day of training camps and these poor Habs fans are over here hating the leafs.

Don’t mistake understanding maths and inflation with Leaf hate.

Also, isn’t Matthews the best player in the game? If he stays healthy, I think he scores 70.
Sounds like love to me.

For all the stuff about Dubas getting “bent over” on negotiations, all of the deals to sign our elite kids so far ended up being pretty good. Even Mitch’s really tbh and I thought it was pretty high.

The 34 contract should of been for 7-8 years , not 5

Got nearly McJesus money and only bought 1 year of UFA
