Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I'm probably alone in this but I sorta get why the NHL wants Phoenix to work as a market. It's a bigger TV market than a lot of places they already have teams in (Tampa, Seattle, Miami, Minneapolis, Denver, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Nashville, Columbus) and a big snowbird location. It should in theory be workable. Don't think being a shit team almost their whole history has really helped.

The college rink thing is pretty damn embarrassing though.
I get it as well. Huge market indeed. But at some point you've lost too much $ and it's not worth it. It actually would have been better if they left years ago, then tried Phoenix area again a second time. There's been issues since they arrived in 1996.

I get why they were attracted to Phoenix…. Golf.

I don’t really get why they’ve wasted so much money for so long when it hasn’t worked. Also probably golf though.

Yeah I don't disagree at all about having to pull the chute at some point, just the motivations for badly wanting to make it work there are obvious to me.

Guessing their hope was that they could salvage Phoenix *and* get an expansion fee for Houston and have teams in like 14 of the top 15 US tv markets (the missing one being a market they already tried in, Atlanta).

Looking more bleak than ever though.

Yeah, it makes perfect sense why the NHL wants Phoenix to work.

But they’ve been banging their heads against the wall trying to make it work for 25+ years now, and they’re farther away from having a viable situation there than they’ve ever been.

Maybe at some point down the road in the future, if a reputable deep-pocketed local ownership group and a downtown arena have materialized, you give the market another go.

But until then, they need to stop trying to make Fetch happen. It’s not going to happen.

Atlanta is also a huge market yet that failed twice. Demographics are important.

It’s funny though. Gary gave up on Atlanta seemingly in the blink of an eye, with almost no effort expended to save that team. Especially in comparison to Phoenix.

people have short memories I guess. not too interested in going back to the plumber days here just because this moron is unaware what actually happened.
