Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I think the stats have shown that they are better offensively than defensively. But yeah, a lot of them would advocate for them acquiring another run of the mill #4/5d which isn't gonna do anything or add anything they don't have.

Outside of the obvious absence of a stud, rare #1 that teams only find when they draft them, they are now clearly missing a Jake Muzzin type but maybe Liljegren can provide that. And yeah, I would explore trading one of their studs up front if they can get proper value but the most they would have gotten for Nylander is Gudbranson or some shit. Dude is perpetually undervalued by everyone; not a great candidate to trade. And yeah, their forwards would immediately look much weaker anyway.
so you agree that we need to upgrade our forwards more than our D, excellent

Muzzin's career might be over. This is a little different than that I think. They need a longterm replacement. It could come internally but what if it doesn't?
I agree we need an additional shutdown d-man, but until Muzz is ruled out for the season I will expect him to return.

Isn't all this speculation entirely based off Mucho's big mouth? Has anyone anywhere suggested his career is actually close to over beyond bigmouth Mitch? Asking sincerely, I only saw Mitchie.

There is something a tad ironic about us sitting 27th in scoring and 32nd in goals scored above expected and everyone saying trade all our stars for D.

I do think we need to think about a replacement for Muzzin and I think the D has a role to play in our offense struggling but I think a lot of it is simply going to even itself out as we progress into the season. Matthews isn't going to end up with a SH% of 3 at evens.

3 concussions in what.. 6 months? I don't need Marner's input for me to understand how bad that is.

They've got the star power to be able to dominate offensively in most games, as they did last year. But without Muzzin I'm not sure they have the "shutdownability" that they had vs Tampa, for example. I think Liljegren is awesome but will he be ready for that role this year? Not sure. It's entirely possible that the Leafs will be on the market for a top 4 d come the deadline.

has he officially been diagnosed with a concussion?

I've seen "neck injury" everywhere, which would be distinct. Could still be serious. Could still be career threatening.

and he went to LA to see a neck specialist. not a neurologist.

so colour me skeptical on the doom and gloom.

Hell, they were apparently pretty close to acquiring Ethan Bear. I'm not sure why tbh.. But they clearly were on the lookout for another d.

We were? Where was that from? I missed that completely.
As per Elliotte:

“ Toronto did look at it, I think the issue was Vancouver was willing to go where Toronto wasn’t with the extra draft pick and with all the salary the Leafs would have to take, Toronto didn’t want to do that, to add the extra pick. Because one of the reasons is if they trade one they could have as few as three this year. [Timothy] Liljegren and [Jordie] Benn could be back next week.”

I mean yeah, no need to give up a draft pick for a dude that's largely a cap dump. It's Ethan Bear, not Chris Pronger. They obviously wanted the Canes to take a shitty AHLer instead. Because that's what Bear is worth at that AAV, even with retention.

maybe considering attempting to acquire depth d-men like Bear does not scream to me "Muzz is dead"

Oh no, I was not implying that. To me it mostly implies that Holl is dead and they wanted to give him some relief. But only if the cost was free and they probably would have wanted some more retention as well.. Or maybe even adding Holl in the deal was part of the plan.

Just saying that they aren't as dead set on their d as you are.

you posted about Bear immediately after I posted about Muzz not being dead, which is why I assume you thought they were connected 😘

Nope! Just showing that they are on the lookout for shitty d like Bear to help bolster the corps. Granted, I do disagree with acquiring d of this talent. I think they're loaded with #5/6/7/8d as it is. Much prefer going big game hunting but maybe this was just a Holl replacement.

Quick question...

Why can't Gio-Brodie replace Dead Muzz-Shit Hole? Saying that we need a shutdown pairing guy is great and all, but are we going to find one who is significantly better than Gio for a price that we're willing to pay?

Rielly-Lilly
Gio-Brodie
Sandin-Holl
