you think it is 100% correct to knowingly and deliberately jeopardize the safety of goalies when their masks are damaged/malfunctioning?
It's NHL Rule 9.6, Helmets that we are talking about here on that Oettinger penalty. Here is the last paragraph of that rule:
When a goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face
mask in order to secure a stoppage of play, the Referee shall stop
play as outlined above and assess the goalkeeper a minor penalty for
delay of game. If the goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet
and/or face mask when the opposing team is on a breakaway, during
the course of a penalty shot or shootout attempt, the Referee shall
stop play and award a goal to the non-offending team.
The rule doesn't have grey area for the fact the mask is loose or damaged or out of position. Again they let goalies get away with sort of shaking their mask off when a strap comes loose. But this is the 2nd time now I've see this penalty called when the goalie grabs his mask off like that.
Hate the rule, not the ref in this case.
this is not the situation. will need to find but I'm 95% certain NHL made a modification/addendum to indicate that when a goalie takes a shot off the mask, play should be stopped (or something along those lines). It's NHL Rule 9.6, Helmets that we are talking about here on that Oettinger penalty. if the refs were paying attention they would have noticed the damaged strap and whistled the play dead. the fact that they didn't reflects poorly on them.Based on the fact that it took him 30 seconds to remove his helmet, I doubt that he was in any physical danger. The refs can't read his mind, and the only thing they know for sure is that he attempted and eventually succeeded in removing his mask during a play where the opponents had possession of the puck. I don't think the refs had a choice here.
Not sure if they did tbh, didn’t Kuemper lose his helmet on a shot in the finals last year and Tampa scored on the rebound and it counted?this is not the situation. will need to find but I'm 95% certain NHL made a modification/addendum to indicate that when a goalie takes a shot off the mask, play should be stopped (or something along those lines).
this was a specific change made recently for just this reason.
Canes scored a goal last night a second after Korpisalo shook off his mask. It was like 3 seconds after he was hit in the mask and had a strap come undone. Not sure if they did tbh, didn’t Kuemper lose his helmet on a shot in the finals last year and Tampa scored on the rebound and it counted?
NHL refs are garbage
