Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I'm not forming an opinion on the rulebook, I'm just confirming that the rulebook was correctly applied given past history and explanation.

I don't get how that Bobby M goal was taken away. it's just a lucky, fluke goal. Why does NHL has so many rules and try so hard to take goals away? This league needs goals and since Bettman's been in charge they have done everything to decrease goals scored.

It's NHL Rule 9.6, Helmets that we are talking about here on that Oettinger penalty. Here is the last paragraph of that rule:

When a goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face
mask in order to secure a stoppage of play, the Referee shall stop
play as outlined above and assess the goalkeeper a minor penalty for
delay of game. If the goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet
and/or face mask when the opposing team is on a breakaway, during
the course of a penalty shot or shootout attempt, the Referee shall
stop play and award a goal to the non-offending team.

The rule doesn't have grey area for the fact the mask is loose or damaged or out of position. Again they let goalies get away with sort of shaking their mask off when a strap comes loose. But this is the 2nd time now I've see this penalty called when the goalie grabs his mask off like that.

Hate the rule, not the ref in this case. I do agree the rule is flawed for a situation where the masks is damaged or so knocked out of position that the goalie cannot see.

You can see at the end of the clip there is damage and hes fixing it. This is not removing it for the sake of stopping play

Doesn't matter, you cannot intentionally pull the mask off as the rule is written. Obviously Oettinger was looking to have play stopped when he pulled his mask off (the reason why he was doing so, be it a loose strap, mask out of position or damaged, is not a factor in application of this rule as written).

Here is the play I was talking about last season where this same call was made:

Based on the fact that it took him 30 seconds to remove his helmet, I doubt that he was in any physical danger. The refs can't read his mind, and the only thing they know for sure is that he attempted and eventually succeeded in removing his mask during a play where the opponents had possession of the puck. I don't think the refs had a choice here.

he’s screaming at the ref that his mask’s broken so kind of a dick move to ignore him to the point he had to pull it off then give him a penalty.

I guess I find it frustrating the amount of dangerous shit that gets let go in this league in contrast to this stuff.

The refs are also supposed to blow the whistle when the goalie is hit in the mask with a shot.

That play literally happens all the time and they never call a penalty. Thats the frustrating part about NHL officiating. It doesn't matter what the rule book says, because they don't call it consistently.

Every time a mask breaks, or a strap comes off, goalies always try to get mask off.

this is not the situation. will need to find but I'm 95% certain NHL made a modification/addendum to indicate that when a goalie takes a shot off the mask, play should be stopped (or something along those lines).

this was a specific change made recently for just this reason.

if the refs were paying attention they would have noticed the damaged strap and whistled the play dead. the fact that they didn't reflects poorly on them.

Not sure if they did tbh, didn’t Kuemper lose his helmet on a shot in the finals last year and Tampa scored on the rebound and it counted?

I have a hard time giving refs any benefit of the doubt. The fact they had to huddle at centre for the Rielly call a few nights ago while he was 2 feet away from the play or the Seragachev punch last night goes uncalled again while standing directly next to it shows they are either incompetent or interpret rules as they see fit at the time of the infraction

We all know that they're instructed to game manage and not call the book. Then throw a layer of personal discretion on top and you get what we have.

Canes scored a goal last night a second after Korpisalo shook off his mask. It was like 3 seconds after he was hit in the mask and had a strap come undone.
