I dunno I don't really see it. they do have some physical guys on the back end I guess.

Not so much who they have but the way they played. Last night anyway.

I know, it's only one game, right?

I've only missed maybe three Leafs games this season and I haven't seen them play as hard as the Rangers did last night.

zeke what is your response to the proposition that Tampa's gooning it up will lead to a series where special teams are more likely to influence the outcome? do you prefer our special teams to theirs? pretty sure they handily won the battle last series.

you can either believe a dumb and lazy narrative, or consult the nerdies which show that the Nuge is good at hockeying

I mean, sorta.

But keep in mind that his GVSA for the 2 years prior is basically in line with a #6 forward and his offensive gvsa number being stupid this year is largely due to scoring 52 PPP on a powerplay he's the 3rd or 4th best forward on.

Being the guy who passes to McDavid before he either shoots or passes to Leon isn't exactly the most difficult PP role in the league and any impact stats being derived from numbers generated in that role should be looked at in it's proper context.

in 5v4 situations we scored 5 goals (3pp, 2pk) and they scored 6 goals (5pp 1pk), despite them having many more opportunities.

in 5v3 situations we scored 1 goals and they scored 2 goals, though they had over 3 minutes of 2 man advantages while we had 36 seconds.

That being said, we need to do better on the PP.

let me do a quick check....

Last year regular season ---> Playoffs

TBL 5v4: 7.98g/60, 7.60xg/60 -----> 6.25g/60, 7.32xg/60
TOR 5v4: 10.29g/60, 8.89xg/60 ---> 4.11g/60, 7.81xg/60

TBL 4v5: 6.76g/60, 6.51xg/60 ---> 4.11g/60, 7.82xg/60
TOR 4v5: 6.61g/60, 5.88xg/60 ---> 6.25g/60, 7.32xg/60

This year regular season

TBL 5v4: 9.14g/60, 7.52xg/60
TOR 5v4: 9.03g/60, 9.72xg/60

TBL 4v5: 7.32g/60, 8.00xg/60
TOR 4v5: 5.96g/60, 6.46xg/60

The leafs handled the Bolts' PP well, but their own fizzled pretty bad.

this year they both seem to have good PPs again, though it does look like TB's PK has definitely slipped a bit.

4 v 5 numbers are GA?

that matches my eye test, which told me our PP dropped off from the season more than theirs, and their PK did a better job shutting us down than vice versa.

I do think we matchup better against Tampa 5 v 5 than on special teams. Which of course means it will be a penalty filled series.

"penalty filled" is a nice way to put it.

Leafs won game 1. So in game 2 the refs gave them SEVEN PPs.

Leafs won game 3. So in game 4 the refs gave them EIGHT PPs.

Leafs were about to win the series in game 6. So the refs gave them a full 2 minute 2 man advantage with less than 10 minutes left on 2 horseshit calls to save them.

I think we generally agree about both the overall shittiness, and specific anti-Leafs bias in NHL refereeing.

the problem though is that we will have NHL refereeing for the Tampa series, and subsequent ones. Bruins would be likely be worse too.

if the refs do that again, we will lose, no question.

and remember, being "tough" only made it worse last year, not better.

It is nice to see you guys getting ready for another early exit from playoffs
I’m ready since November, we can’t win with current coach

I think I may prefer the Isles over the Pens to make it. Unless Sid would beat Boston somehow, if that’s who eight plays (I have no idea how the match ups work anymore).

Pretty sure Boston will play the eighth team.

I'd like to see Florida and Boston. I think that would be a real good series, especially if Florida wins.

Islanders and Boston would be good too. Can't see it happening but I'd love to see the Bruins go tits up in the first round.

A la Tampa Bay a while back. Would be delish. Doubt it happens though.

Like I said yesterday, I’ve seen insane regular season teams shockingly bust in the playoffs too frequently to ignore, so I’m kinda expecting (hoping) that someone takes them out early.

A lot of 30 somethings on that Bruins squad — how much do they have in the tank after months of dominating
