Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

East

7. FLA (.568): 81gms, 92pts, 36rw, 40row (vCAR)
8. PIT (.563): 80gms, 90pts, 31rw, 39row (vCHI, @CBJ)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. NYI (.562): 81gms, 91pts, 35rw, 40row (vMTL)
10. BUF (.551): 79gms, 87pts, 29rw, 37row (@NJD, vOTT, @CBJ)

Had to add Buf in cuz they have a real chance now.

FLA and PIT just have to win out to get in. Theyre in control. FLA plays a good but struggling canes team, while the pens get the two worst teams in the league. Isles get to face MTL but it might not matter.

West

8.WPG (.581): 80gms, 93pts, 35rw, 44row (@MIN, @COL)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. NSH (.563): 80gms, 90pts, 29rw, 35row (vMIN, vCOL)

This one looks over tbh.

Man Flames look rough with that Huberdeau and Kadri contracts yikes
Holy shit those contracts look terrible. Issue is they signed guys at 29 and 32 long-term who were never going to match those seasons ever again. If they were going to win with them, it had to be early. Missing the playoffs is unbelievable.
Treliving's contract is now done but it seems he hasn't gotten much crap at all.

Those contracts were never going to look good , pure desperation moves

Treliving fucked up royally , those 2 stars were gone and he waited until the last second to try to salvage the season

Huby was never going to repeat that career year but nobody was expecting half production

Maybe he should of let him playout the year but Flames were not risking it

They also had lots of good luck last year. Tkachuk had a great year, but none of Gaureau, Lindholm, Mangiapane came anywhere close to matching their totals from last year.

Those guys scored 117 goals last year and 58 this year.

Treliving tried to be cute and get Tkachuk on a "Cheap" cap hit for 3 years. He's even said he would have signed 6-8 years. Gaudreau was offered his big deal the week before he was going to be UFA.

The big lesson from the cap era is to identify your core and pay them. Don't dick them around, don't try to bridge them. Pay them and then squeeze everyone else.

I dunno, an argument can also be made that an underpaid superstar can win you a Cup or two (Kucherov and McKinnon come to mind).

Thing is, it’s not like the Avs squeezed MacKinnon into a bargain contract. When he signed the deal, it was actually a slight overpayment considering he seemed to have settled in as a 20-25 goal/55-60 point player.

It was just Colorado’s good luck that, similar to Brad Marchand with Boston, he didn’t break out and become an superstar until after his new deal had been signed.

As for Kucherov, well, fuck Tampa. I still can’t believe Kucherov didn’t take them to the cleaners on his long-term deal after the way they bent him over a barrel on the cheap 3-year bridge deal they forced him into.
