Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I dunno, an argument can also be made that an underpaid superstar can win you a Cup or two (Kucherov and McKinnon come to mind).

Neither of those gots guy squeezed, bridged, or any of that though. They were paid more or less what they were worth at the time, Kuch took the Florida discount because taxes, weather, and whatever the hell else seems to keep hockey players taking discounts there. Barkov and Tkachuk probably took less than they could have pushed for, so it doesn't appear to just be a Tampa thing either. Stamkos, Kuch, Hedman and now Point all took the Florida discount as well obviously.

Kucherov definitely got bridged & squeezed.

3 years @ $4.7M right after he’d finished back-to-back regular seasons of 30 goals/65 points and put up a combined 21 goals & 41 points in 43 playoff games?

Part of the problem in Calgary is Sutter. That style of coaching just doesn't work anymore. Apparently the players hate his guts and I can't imagine he returns.

The big lesson from the cap era is to identify your core and pay them. Don't dick them around, don't try to bridge them. Pay them and then squeeze everyone else.

Fully acknowledging that it's largely player dependent - if these guys wanna get paid and give you no wiggle room, just pay them of course but it's way better than losing them. But trying to get a deal on these players can be absolutely enormous. The top dogs are already undervalued based on overall value brought.. To get another 10+% off the sticker price could make or break a team over the course of the following 7-8 years.

we got a great deal on Willy. didn't get us very far.

Allowed them to keep the band together, add Brodie, sign Mo long-term, etc. A 10+% discount on a star player is a lot more money than a 10% discount on a 2nd/3rd liner. And a 10% discount on top of the discount that all star players get vs their expected value = a big mother fucker of a discount. That's where you can get most of your gains from a cap perspective. I get the concept: it's better to pay them than to lose them, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to trim some money off those players too.

I’ve been semi-quietly hoping that Matty and Marner basically resign long term at pretty much their current numbers. Willy likely moves into $9m-$10m territory. Tavares likely drops to $5m or less on a 2-3 year deal. Net impact is hopefully $4m or so that can be used on others while locking these guys for the rest of their careers.

You take what you can get. But if you are going to play hardball with a guy gotta sign them long term so they forget by the time the deal is up like Willy and Marner, not opt for the bridge deal.

It only worked for Kuch and Point because they won cups thanks to those deals. But its ruined the relationship many times (Subban, Tkachuk, ROR, Laine).

The key to stars on great deals is to have them bloom relatively late, or just give them big money when they are 40 point players and hope they get as good as you think they will.
