Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

so he's using the nhl lockout year as the cutoff, whjich makes sense, but also can be a bit misleading as the lockout itself was a big hit to the league despite the benefit of the cap.

NHL:

03-04 $2.24
04-05: $0.00
05-06: $2.27

NBA:

03-04: 2.93
04-05: 3.19
05-06: 3.42

So the NHL only grew 1% over those two years thanks to the lockout being a big hit, while the NBA grew 17%.

Since 05-06, the NBA has grown 192%, the NHL has grown 151%.

what's interesting is that the NHl was actually closing the gap for the first 10 years after that year - the NBA was 50% bigger than the NHL in 05-06, but only 30% bigger by 2015. But then the NBA really exploded in 2016 and has doubled in size from $5.2 revenue in 2015 to $10.0 this year, while the NHL has only grown 45% in that time. I have to think that 2016 must have been the year the NBA got that huge new tv deal.

NBA size over the NHL per year:

03-04: 31%
04-05: google% (nhl locked out whole season)
05-06: 50%
06-07: 43%
07-08: 46%
08-09: 46%
09-10: 31%
10-11: 29%
11-12: 9% (NBA locked out for about 20% of season)
12-13: 77% (NHL locked out for about 40% of season)
13-14: 30%
14-15: 31%

So revenues-wise NHL and NBA increased at the exact same rate over this time. But then the NBA exploded, and i'm pretty sure they've been by far the fastest growing league over this time period:

15-16: 44%
16-17: 68%
17-18: 63%
18-19: 73%
19-20: 80% (covid both leagues missed about 15% of season - don't remember the difference between playoffs)
20-21: 220% (covid nba missed 15%, Nhl missed 33% - don't remember the difference between playoffs)
21-22: 85%

To ARZ: 1st, 2nd, 7th, L.Eriksson ($6.0 x1), J.Beagle ($3.0 x1), A.Roussel ($3.0 x1), $1.0 x6 retained on OEL contract
To VAN: C.Garland (RFA x2, extended $4.95 x5), O.Ekman-Larsson ($7.26 x6)

and apparently they're looking to dump Garland too.

Vancouver has to be the most clueless org i have ever seen.

The only way you fuck yourself this hard on a buyout is if you actually think you are good.

They arent even close, and are likely going to sign someone to a really dumb contract with the room they just freed

Let OEL linger for 2 years then his deal is tradeable.

Cap space is gold. There should be almost no situation where it makes sense to have it taken up by guys not playing for you. Other than deadline retention deals that expire at the end of the season.

If you know in your heart of hearts you're going to suck for the forseeable future who gives a shit where your money is allocated?
