Don't think any team was particularly sabotaged by goaltending. FLA and OTT had below average goaltending but not awful, and i'm not sure there's any real reason to expect improvement from them in nets. BUF and DET had awful goaltending but not really any worse than the skaters were in front of them.

Ottawa though was actually a pretty decent team this year and that was with them missing Norris all year, so that should be a pretty big add, especially if they don't lose Debrincat. They don't really have any capspace to do anything else though other than re-sign their RFAs. They could choose to use Debrincat's caphit elsewhere tho. I'd also say Ottawa just has MORE core-type talent than the other groups. They've got a full fivesome of young top line forward talent (Stutzle, Norris, Tkachuk, Debrincat, Batherson) and a full threesome of youngish top pair dman talent (Chabot, Sanderson, Chychrun). Not sure if they have the super-elite talent some others might have though.

Like this is definitely worth more than any tax savings played in certain markets.
Agreed 100% and it's completely ignored by everyone.
Also, NHL is different from the other sports. New York and LA really don't get the biggest endorsers (Aside from Gretzky years).
Interestingly enough, 6 of 10 are (Including Horvat) from Canadian teams.

Batherson was at a 20 goal 60 pt season at 25... is he considered "core"? Same numbers willy had at 21.

he was 24, and the year before at 23 he was pretty much PPG albeit missing half the season. definitely the weakest name there though yeah and sure you could remove him.

In regards to the taxes and what it means getting paid in different states...

Why wouldn't the NHL's head office in new york pay the players centrally. Everything is taxed at the NY state tax level and that money is then distributed to each city.... so if you are a city that pays no state tax, then you will actually get money given back to you.... if your state or province has a higher tax... then you get less but it goes directly to the city.

Teams payroll goes into the NHL coffers and your paycheck comes from the League not your team.

Now everyone's contract is equal. If you want to take a discount to play in florida for the weather go ahead, but it shouldn't cost another team more because of their taxes.

They are already paying in USD. Make it an average from zero to the highest state/provincial tax rate and everyone gets the same.

CRA is going after a bunch of ex Jays like José Bautista and Josh Donaldson for tax dodging.

Might impact big US stars like Auston Matthews and Lane Hutson going forward.

excerpt
Although the facts differ in their battles with the CRA, they share a common issue that experts say could have a chilling effect on Canadian sports teams’ ability to attract top international athletes: How non-resident high earners can protect their income and mitigate Canada’s high taxes.
Specifically, the tax agency is challenging how much income the players can deduct from their taxes through contributions to a form of pension plan through an employer called a Retirement Compensation Agreement (RCA). None of the allegations have yet been tested in court.

Dana isn't wrong...the NHL is run by people who don't understand the modern environment.

Buuuuttttt...

You have to be super careful which of the hundreds/thousands of these social media "sensations" you align yourself with if you're doing more than trying to make a quick buck right now. A brand with 100 yrs of history should be picky about not aligning itself with "influencers" who run around doing dumb shit and getting views.
