Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

If they can get Karlsson for Petry and Granlund (+picks/kids) at least it should be interesting.

Yeah Pens are capped out. Even after dumping one of their backup goalies they still only be able to carry a 21 man roster (i.e. one extra skater) heading into the season.

Contracts they would probably like to get rid of:

Rakell (30) $5.0 x5
Granlund (31) $5.0 x2
Carter (38): $3.1 x1
Letang (36): $6.1 x5
Petry (36): $6.25 x2
woooooof. dubie has some work ahead of him lol. yikes.

I guess shithead realizes that Russia’s the only country that’ll ever pay him to play professional hockey for the rest of his career.

Would be nice if the government had a procedure in place to revoke the citizenship & passport of any Canadians who’ve applied for Russian citizenship since the war began, so he’d be stuck living with that choice for the rest of his life.

And hopefully Russia will eventually end up so hard up for troops that ole Brendan ends up conscripted onto the front lines.

Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Letang, and Hot Karl would be a pretty strong core group.

Would it though?

If they all repeat last year with no injuries and no age related decline it's strong but there's a really good chance that they won't.

I know Sid & Gino are built different than even most star players. Sid is generational and Gino not far off of that standard, but still. There were 3 players older than 32 who put up 1.0ppg or higher last season. Sid (35), Gino (36), and Ovy (37). Stamkos (32), Karlsson (32) Tavares (32) Panarin (31) were the only other guys over 30 to do it. You can actually extend that to .97ppg (Giroux at .96 would be next) and it encompasses 44 players who were .97 or higher.

We don't know when father time is going to come for them, but the whole bag has serious and significant injury histories to compound simple age related decline.

I think a Karlsson move makes sense, as long as the owner is prepared to pay that ticket, which obviously many aren't. Dubas has to maximize whatever their old guys have left.

Yeah, it's a fairly obvious move for where they are. The need in pittsburgh is to take a wild swing at some weirdo old man magic and pray. They're actually where a lot of people pretend Toronto is. 1-2 years to take another run at winning and then it's all over and they're already pot committed to taking another run at it. Why not mortgage even further if you're already comfortable that a rebuilding era is coming?

Malkin 37
Crosby 36
Letang 36
Karlsson 33
Guentzel 29

Smith 32
Rust 31
Rakell 30
Graves 28
Pettersson 27

Carter 38
Eller 34
Rutta 33
Acciari 32
Nieto 31

That's if they can get rid of Petry (36) and Granlund (32).

For comparison, the last 4 title teams combined had 6 regulars 33 yrs or older to start the playoffs, and of those 6, 4 were 4th liners/3rd pairing. Only Pietrangelo & Martinez were key players for their cup winning team.

Pittsburgh would have more than that by themselves, and by a lot.
