Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Matthews before last year:
"I’ve loved my time here,” said the Maple Leafs superstar. “I really love playing in the city of Toronto, I consider it home now. So I’ve really enjoyed my time. My teammates have been incredible year after year. It’s nice to have the support this city brings.”

“I understand why you asked. But at the same time I’m focused on the season. I’m focused on winning, on continuing to improve and help push this team over the edge,” he said. “I understand why you (media) guys want to talk about it, but at the same time, there’s nothing that can be done. I’m under contract for two more years. I can’t extend for another 10 months.”

“The city has embraced the players, embraced myself, my family,” he said. “I have grown comfortable in my own skin here. It’s not easy to do that at times. It’s such a special place to play.

“A lot of history here and it’s a big honour to go out every night and wear the Maple Leaf on my chest. It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted. I really appreciate it. It’s felt like home for a while. It’s just an awesome place to play.”

The off-season before the final year of that deal is when the fireworks will start. Because there’s no chance he’s extending early, will play out the season like Tavares did, and there’s going to be tons of talk about whether they should trade him even though they’re probably going to be competitive. Man, the boos when he plays on the Leafs and they visit Edmonton are going to be earthshaking.

Just imagine the reaction if Matthews had ever said something like that.

It'll soon change to

"he only wanted four years because he's waiting for Arizona to build their new arena".

Give it time

Don't understand what a defunct football franchise from Houston has to do with hockey anyway.

There was some tweet or post that I saw on FB or here that broke down and combined the last two Matty contracts, and concluded that basically the Leafs ended up with a great deal considering what Matty wanted before his last contract and what he ended up getting with the two contracts combined, and that basically the Leafs end up getting an extra year for $900k. Anyone see that?

Frenemy has reared his ugly head again and I need it.
