Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I think it sums-up NHL's problem that their last choice would be the team that would make by far the most $ and according to reports, be the 3rd or 4th most valuable NHL franchise the day it got it's team. Gary cannot accept the NHL for what it is.

The cost of a 2nd team in Toronto would be fucking astronomical. There is zero chance MLSE is letting another team enter their economic zone and letting the league and other owners split on what would probably be a 1.5-2 Billion dollar expansion fee at their expense.

Well they get screwed bad as it is by NHL.

I do think Salt Lake City can be a solid, real hockey town in the U.S. But Gary is horny for Houston I am sure.

Expanding to Atlanta is absurd.

I’m sure the market is salivating for the marketing department, but THEY DO NOT GIVE A SHIT!

Is this UGA football? Nope. Braves baseball? Nope. They barely care about the Falcons and Hawks.

Ugh.

Yup. Not a great sports town.

using the Athletic's more objective ranking i.e. Net Rating:

CGY (+22): Weegar 8, Andersson 8, Hanifin 5, Tanev 3, Kylington 0, Zadorov-2, (+Oesterle -3)
TOR (+17): Rielly 6, Lilljegren 5, McCabe 4, Brodie 3, Giordano 1, Klingberg -2, (+Timmins -2)
OTT (+10): Chychrun 6, Chabot 6, Sanderson 3, Zub 0, Brannstrom 0, Hamonic -5, (+JBD -2)
VAN (+6): Hughes 13, Hronek 5, Soucy -1, Cole -2, Wolanin -4, Irwin -6, (+Myers -8)
WPG (+5): Morrissey 9, Demelo 1, Schmidt 0, Samberg 0, Pionk -2, Dillon -3, (+Stanley -3)
MTL (-11): Matheson 6, Guhle 0, Harris -1, Kovacevic -2, Savard -7, Xhekaj -7, (+Lindstrom -7)

we'll see if the oilers come out ahead tommorrow.

Update: the Oilers do not come out ahead.

Ranked by "likely top 6 only":

CGY (+22): Weegar 8, Andersson 8, Hanifin 5, Tanev 3, Kylington 0, Zadorov-2
TOR (+17): Rielly 6, Lilljegren 5, McCabe 4, Brodie 3, Giordano 1, Klingberg -2
EDM (+16): Bouchard 12, Ekholm 8, Nurse 6, Ceci -2, Kulak -3, Broberg -5
OTT (+10): Chychrun 6, Chabot 6, Sanderson 3, Zub 0, Brannstrom 0, Hamonic -5
WPG (+5): Morrissey 9, Demelo 1, Schmidt 0, Samberg 0, Pionk -2, Dillon -3
VAN (+4): Hughes 13, Hronek 5, Soucy -1, Cole -2, Wolanin -4, Myers -8
MTL (-11): Matheson 6, Guhle 0, Harris -1, Kovacevic -2, Savard -7, Xhekaj -7

And then the leafs have the top ranked #7D too:

TOR Timmins -2
OTT JBD -2
CGY Oesterle -3
WPG Stanley -3
EDM Desharnais -5
VAN Irwin -6
MTL Lindstrom -7

And i'm highly skeptical of that Evan Bouchard rating, even if it's largely based on PP production on that crazy PP.

was gonna say, Bouchard must only be that high cause of the Edmonton PP

hell, even Nurse seems high

this season is gonna be a good test of how much defensive acumen can be taught and coached. my money is on it being a lot easier to learn and teach defensive responsibility rather than offensive ability.

I mean, just looking at our big-three forwards and how they have developed over their careers supports my hypothesis.

So those are the only two teams that actually beat the Leafs in Dom's overall Net Rating. EDM 56, CAR 55, TOR 50. Though that gap is almost entirely due to Reaves being 5 to 9 points worse than their worst.

When i do those rosters above sorting best to worst, it comes out EDM 74, TOR 70, CAR 65.

EDM comes out ahead due simply to the fact that McDavid coming off his best year finally has a significantly better net rating than Matthews coming off his worst year. Also helps that Bouchard's projected as a top-10 impact dman in the nhl this year.

Looking at all the player Net Ratings, noting that these numbers are influenced by projected ice time, linemates, and pp usage.....

Matthews #2 center, #3 overall
Marner T #3-#6 winger, T #8-12 overall
Nylander T #10-#19 winger, T #33-#48 overall
Tavares T #17-#21 center, T #58-#67 overall
Samsonov T #9-#14 goalie
Rielly T #30-#37 dman
