Rangers are a strange team because they got the Fox gift, and incredible lottery luck in 2000'. But Kakko and Lafrieneiere are, thus far big dissapointments to have gone #2 and #1 in drafts.

A reminder about Dom's preseason projections there...while the leafs are currently getting dinged for all their worst net ratings guys being in the lineup, other teams may be getting undue credit. The Pens, for example, had Andreas Johnsson in the lineup at -4, but he just cleared waivers so they're going to have someone like Rem Pitlick (-7) or worse in there instead. Leafs are also getting dinged for Jones at a -2, while many if not most other teams don't have a 3rd goalie counting against their team number. This is probably due to Woll's lack of track record but I'm not sure that's actually going to be a thing.

Best I can tell these are the Rangers ins and outs this year:


Blais/Tarasenko ---> Wheeler
Gauthier/Kravstov/P.Kane ---> Pitlick/Belzile

Mikkola/Harpur ---> Gustafsson

Halak -----> Quick

A full season of Wheeler might be an upgrade over half a season of Tarasenko....if wheeler can stay healthy.

but Quick is terrible.

I think the model is basing their improvement mostly on the signing of Gustafsson, tbh.

He really needs to find a way to better reflect usage in his data.

Gus can be impactful to a team in need of PP1 help, and that's where his value last season comes from. Not plugging the existence of Adam Fox into your nerd math is dumb though. Gus is a puck moving #6 defender with negative value without PP1 minutes.

Honestly he does by far the best job reflecting usage. And he most definitely plugs the existence of Fox into the nerd math. The addition of Klingberg is a big reason why rielly's only at a +6 heading into the year, because klingberg is projected to take up a bunch of his PP time.

the model still absolutely adores Gustafsson tho. who knows, maybe the model is right? lord knows we never got an actual chance to find out.

also, this is a reflection on how much the model hates the two big goons Mikkola and Harpur who he replaces. Panthers thought Mikkola was worth a healthy investment this offseason tho.

I will say that I may accept that Gus may just be the absolute perfect 3rd pair sheltered d on a team without another PP1 option on the point. There maybe isn't a better option out there in that role across the league. But that's as far as I'd go.

Yeah it could be the case of the first ever secretly super elite D getting blackballed from an opportunity in the NHL. Or maybe he's just shit.

I do wonder how much value we're going to get out of Klingberg though to justify that $4.1M.

Sure would be nice to have that number transposed with Sandin back on the roster. Without losing Cowan, of course.
