Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I do wonder how much value we're going to get out of Klingberg though to justify that $4.1M.

Sure would be nice to have that number transposed with Sandin back on the roster. Without losing Cowan, of course.

#besttradeever
I do suspect in this copycat league that we live in, that at least one other team liked Easton Cowan enough to take him semi high as well

He really needs to find a way to better reflect usage in his data.

Gus can be impactful to a team in need of PP1 help, and that's where his value last season comes from. Not plugging the existence of Adam Fox into your nerd math is dumb though. Gus is a puck moving #6 defender with negative value without PP1 minutes.
we'll see how quickly the model corrects re Gus once he starts playing and not getting PP1 time...

Again, why would the owners fire Bettman? He works for them, not the fans.
I have no idea what the owners think. I am confidant there is non-stop bitching from owners about a lot of things to Gary. I do not think Gary is being fired, but I think he should be. This is quite an epic run now in terms of longevity in sports history for a commish.

Doubtful that there's a lot of bitching about Gary amongst the owners.

Case in point, who got the Senators? Good soldier Michael Andlauer. Someone they know that won't rock their boat. I read Andlauer didn't even have the highest bid.

That's a great point in Gary screwing-it-up. NHL lost when they didn't get Ryan Reynolds as owner. It was really stupid. That would have been amazing marketing for the NHL.
NHL is not making wise decisions for growth at all.
And I dunno, I'm sure *some* wanted Reynolds. Also, I'm sure some bitched about how long it took.

With the whole planet playing ice hockey, there should be at least 48 teams

The league is mostly a Ponzi scheme relying on expansion franchise fees
This is the issue with "Expansion". They aren't growing like other leagues, so they are relying on expansion money. NBA doesn't have 32 teams. Why the hell does NHL have 32! they want to expand while there's a team playing in a university arena. It's ludicrous. You shouldn't be relying on expansion $. Teams like Arizona, Carolina, Columbus gets boners over thoughts of the expansion cash.

i dunno being an attendance-based revenue stream seems the opposite of a Ponzi scheme.

one of the funnier things is canadians complaining about Gary's southern franchises when without gary there'd be no oilers, jets, or sens.

Look at the $ coming from Canada. He needs Canada. Rogers' TV deal is more money than the U.S deal with 25 of 32 being from U.S.
It's actually really bad how much % of revenues comes from Canada given there's only 7 teams. Gary knew he couldn't lose more Canadian teams.
The last thing they need is to expand. NBA could make so much $, but they aren't desperate to water-down their sport because of the $ coming-in. Gary's money-losing teams get wet from the expansion cash idea.

The latest Turner/Disney deal (From 2021)is only 225 per year. That's actually pretty shit.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/27/sports/hockey/nhl-turner-media-rights-deal.html#:~:text=Turner Sports made a seven-year commitment, matching the,2021-22 season and continue through the 2027-28 campaign.

Look what Rogers paid a decade ago:

NHL has expanded non-stop for that?
