During the summer of 1997, Hollywood star Harrison Ford, renowned for his iconic roles, inadvertently altered the course of NHL history by impacting the fate of Joe Sakic. The New York Rangers had their sights set on Sakic, a prominent player for the Colorado Avalanche, as they sought to strengthen their roster following the departure of veteran Mark Messier. With Sakic being a standout player for the Avalanche, the Rangers made a move by presenting him with a three-year, $21 million offer sheet, aiming to bring him to New York to team up with Wayne Gretzky.

However, this potential transfer never came to fruition, partly due to the success of Harrison Ford's 1997 film "Air Force One," where he starred as the President of the United States. The blockbuster movie, co-financed by Beacon Entertainment, a subsidiary of Ascent Entertainment—the company overseeing the Avalanche at the time—proved to be a significant financial triumph, grossing over $315 million worldwide. Ascent Entertainment's share of the profits enabled them to match the Rangers' offer sheet for Sakic, ultimately securing his retention with the Avalanche.
