Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

We only want EP because that’s about as good as you’d do in a Marner trade. But really the nucks win a Marner for EP swap, provided they can extend Marner.

Why?

Pettersson is what, a top 10 centre in the league? Matthews-Pettersson up the middle would be the best centre combo the NHL has seen since prime Sid-Gino.

Counting stats are pretty much identical, but one is a good 2 way centre the other a good 2 way winger. I'll take the positional bias to the bank all day every day.

EP drives his lines, Mitch is not the same guy away from Matthews from a nerdies perspective.

Both lovely players though and if for whatever reason their teams wanted to trade them, they'd be ecstatic with that return.

Brady would be absolutely perfect. Too bad Sens we'll never deal him here / Mitch will never sign the long term.

Who knows.

Maybe getting paid beyond top dollar to be the big fish in a really shitty little pond and in a position to go head-to-head with Auston’s Leafs for years is exactly what Paul and his special boy might want.

The massive inferiority complex of the Sens franchise & fanbase is likewise a perfect fit for Mitch & co.

Marner has better counting stats

2 yr 82 game splits:

EP: 37G, 97PTS
MM: 31G, 101PTS

Basically identical. Marner a few more points, EP a decent edge in goals.

better advanced numbers

Eh?

2 yr Even Strength

EP: 3.10 P/60, 56.6% GF, 51.95% xG on 16.4 dzone FO/60 & 7.5 dzone starts/60
MM: 2.95 P/60, 58.7% GF , 53.17% xG, on 15.97 dzone FO/60 & 7.16 dzone starts/60

Again, almost identical but one plays centre and doesn't have Auston Matthews on his line.

and has been way more durable.

EP has missed 4 games combined in the last 3 years. Mitch has missed 27.

EP was also moved to the wing when it mattered.

Stop listening to Zeke. He was moved to 1LW to try to stack a line with JT Miller and as we've found out since was playing hurt. He's a centre, and a really good one.

This.

With all due respect to EP's most common wingers this season: Mikky, Kuzmenko & Boeser....Marner played 802 ES minutes next to Auston Matthews this season and only 303 minutes without. That's life on easy mode.

Interesting thought…embracing the full heel turn

The playoff performance stuff has taken center stage but that's not really what bugs me about Mitch. Perhaps a bit greedy and nitpicky since he's a winger but I just wish he did a better job driving his own line on a consistent basis.

Yeah Marner was shit this year. And he was still as good as EP. That’s the point.

But then what about last year?

22-23

EP: 3.42 P/60 (2.57 P1/60) 51.9%xG
MM: 2.83 P/60 2.34 P1/60) 52.5%xG (50.7% w/o Auston, 54.1% with)

Was last year bad Mitch or good Mitch? Whatever it was, EP was better. This season, EP was "as good" but again looking at that whole w/o Auston thing is a massive cause for concern about Mitch's ability to drive a line. EP doesn't have that luxury of letting Auston do the work.

You’re looking at a bad year by marners standards and an outlier year by EP. In Ep’s down year he was a 66 point guy

EP is as good as Mitch offensively (though I'd argue better rounded because he shoots the puck), and drives his own line while being a centre who doesn't get sheltered minutes and does a pretty okay job defensively in them.
