Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

When you juxtapose this aspect of his personality with that fact that he’s a communist, it makes it especially funny.

Definitely the kind of guy who, under a communist dictatorship, would publicly present as a committed ideologue, while in private would bypass the bread lines and keep himself personally well-stocked with all of the finest wines, liquor & foods through his personal connections with the politburo.
Yep, that's the vibe I always got from him.

All these teams have shitty contracts. Nurse/Campbell, Benn/Seguin, Goodrow, Bob/Knight. Thats not a roadblock to winning if management is good enough.

At least Florida/Dallas/Rags are getting something out of their burdens though.
Yep. And the thing is, if Leafs could get their drafting and developing right which has nothing to do with cap they'd be fine. The blunders of Benn/Seguin contracts matters less when you get fantastic talent in late first round and beyond like Dallas did. Look at Wyatt Johnstone right now. And look where they picked Robertson and Stankoven.
And somehow, with all their depth they find time to play their young talent.

Some of us are more equal than others

Two issues IMO - the couple lost years with Lou/Hunter where we had a billion picks but really didn't have hits beyond Matthews/Lil... that left a gap in the NHL ready kids. And not just not really playing the kids we do have.

Agreed. Those years were terrible for drafting.
That's something Leafs need to hit on given their organizational budget.

Yup. Exacerbated by all the missing 1st round picks over the years as well. Some of them in smart moves, some of them in dumb moves and of course our boy Rodion being deeply unfortunate.

I said it at the time of the Tavares signing but the worst thing we could do was rush to try to push that group over the top and throwing huge money and 1st round picks at late 20's/early 30's impact players did exactly that. We should have been in asset acquisition mode for at least another 2-3 years.

Yeah. I guess the question is why do guys like Robertson, Sandin and Lilly not find their footing here but Johnston, Stankoven and Harley thrive there despite being similar levels of prospects. Letting them play probably doesn't hurt.

The short answer is that they're regularly passed over for depth roles by plugs here until they're overcooked and overready for the NHL and then whenever they're played up the lineup they're given no rope and are back competing for their job against safe plugs as soon as their play ebbs a bit, a critical in game mistake is made, etc.

They found over 14 minutes per game for Stankoven this year despite their depth. Robertson's never come close to that.

It's funny because if you go back many years ago the big argument for the Marlies coming to Toronto was that it would help the prospects and they were just down the street.
Leafs are failing horribly at this. Why hasn't Steeves played yet?

We've decided that our organizational focus regarding our 4th line is to be the last stop in the careers of plugs instead. Reaves, Simmons, ZAR, Clifford. We seem absolutely intent on forcing 1-2 non NHL calibre players onto our 4th line at any given time instead of using it as a place to break in kids.

Which kind of guts me because we had part of the right idea once upon a time in bringing in long in the tooth skill players (Spezza is the best 4th liner we've had in this era, by a lot imo) and playing a guy like that in a sheltered role with 2 kids like Moore, Marchment, Robertson, Steeves, Holmberg, etc, etc would be the way to go. But yeah, we decided a bunch of years ago that we need to play a certain way to win and our 4th line being low event pluggy was a necessity. It's fucking stupid.

We're just not a patient organization.

We were patient with ZAR and Gregor unfortunately.

Yeah, I meant patient with our own drafted kids that we've put 2-6 years of development into. With fucking randos that have spent 2-6 weeks in the organization we're super, super patient.

4th line is usually under the perview of the coach — did Berube play kids on that line in STL

Someone was convinced you need gud pros in the bottom 6 to win and those same someones did a terrible job evaluating gud pros.
