Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

What am I missing with Trouba. He really has negative value?

he's very not good, yes. nowhere near worth that contract. He's basically an ok physical #4D.

BUT, there are definitely teams out there that would still love to trade for him, but he doesn't like waiving his no trade clause, at least for some teams, so they might try the waivers with a backdeal worked out with the team that takes him.

Rangers are in panic mode - zibanejad, trocheck and Kreider are in their 30s and all starting to look diminished. Lafreniere had a nice start but he’s leveled off and doesn’t look like a guy whose going to level up. Their 3rd and 4th line depth up front also stinks.

'20: .564pts% (#18), 47.3xgf% 5v5 (#27), 46.5xgf% ALL (#30)
'21: .536pts% (#16), 48.5xgf% 5v5 (#20), 50.8xgf% ALL (#15)
'22: .671pts% (#7), 47.7xgf% 5v5 (#21), 50.9xgf% ALL (#15)
'23: .652pts% (#9), 49.5xgf% 5v5 (#19), 52.5xgf% ALL (#13)
'24: .695pts% (#1), 48.3xgf% 5v5 (#23), 52.3xgf% ALL (#11)
'25: .563pts% (#15), 48.4xgf% 5v5 (#21), 47.5xgf% ALL (#25)

Even at their best these rangers have always been a middling to poor team 5v5, who's been able to succeed based on goaltending and a great PP.

You could squint and justify those 7th and 9th place finishes in '22 and '23 based on goaltending and special teams, but #1 overall last year was a bridge too far and clearly a fluke. Good on Drury for seeing that.

Some quick work by Drury here could avoid any serious downturn though - he's absolutely right to try and jettison overpaid old guys like Trouba and Zibs, and Kreider too but not as crucial. The team has a super elite core in Panarain/Fox/Shesterkin, and solid young depth througout the lineup. If he could turn the $20m wasted on the overpaid old guys into something better and younger, he could set the team up in an even better position over the next few years than the superficial success of the last few years.

Actually I don’t. One thing Al Bundy has always done well is D. He has always favoured guys who can actually play hockey - gio, brodie, Anderson, kylington, tanev, oel etc.

Good luck Drury
