Even at their best these rangers have always been a middling to poor team 5v5, who's been able to succeed based on goaltending and a great PP.
You could squint and justify those 7th and 9th place finishes in '22 and '23 based on goaltending and special teams, but #1 overall last year was a bridge too far and clearly a fluke. Good on Drury for seeing that.
Some quick work by Drury here could avoid any serious downturn though - he's absolutely right to try and jettison overpaid old guys like Trouba and Zibs, and Kreider too but not as crucial. The team has a super elite core in Panarain/Fox/Shesterkin, and solid young depth througout the lineup. If he could turn the $20m wasted on the overpaid old guys into something better and younger, he could set the team up in an even better position over the next few years than the superficial success of the last few years.
