Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

When you look at Leaf playoff starters in the Shanahan era, whether it was Fred, Jack or Samsonov, it’s not like their play took a nosedive in the playoffs. They all regularly handed out freshly-baked muffins throughout the regular season too.

This year is different though. Whether it translates to the playoffs or not remains to be seen, but Stolarz is on a completely different level than those guys. He’s been one of the better starters in the league all year.

His only caveat is the same as Joseph Woll’s—staying healthy. And not staying healthy is the only criticism you can make of Woll’s playoffs last year too. When he was in, he was good.

Laughton is the biggest fuckup. Berube is maybe the other one.

He’s had other bad moves, but the cost was manageable. Klingberg, Kampf, Reaves.

Laughton (and probably Berube) was the only one you’ll regret though.

We won’t be able to complain about Bérubé until we are ousted early in the playoffs. Right now we are on pace to finish 1st in the division which we haven’t been able to say before

which we haven’t been able to say before

Because every year someone put up stupid point totals.

23-24: Florida 110 points
22-23: Boston 135pts
21-22: Florida 122pts
19-20: Boston 100pts (117pt 82 game pace)
18-19: Tampa 128 pts
17-18: Tampa 113 pts

Here's how our current 105 point pace would have finished over those same years:

23-24: 3rd
22-23: 2nd
21-22: 4th
19-20: 3rd
18-19: 3rd
17-18: 3rd

We didn't get better, Boston and Florida got worse.

Can just watch the leafs play hockey and know we took a step back in the level of play for 95 percent of the games they played so far.

Mmm the bottom of our division also got way way better. The Atlantic is a hair behind the central for top pts%.

But yes all the top teams with elite players on bargain deals finally had to deal with the covid cap crunch the leafs had to hilariously deal with the instant they signed the big 4 right before covid hit.
