There's still hope that they do a full clean of the org, and decide that the whole French thing isn't actually that important in the grand scheme of things.

Yep... and Leaf fans have been absolutely on point with their view of how good the Leafs are/will be.

If I was a Habs fan, I think I'd be less concerned about the fact that the team is bottoming out right now as I would be about the fact that this team's ceiling was only ever as a bubble playoff team to start off with. Which is even more concerning when two of the team's key, highly-paid star players are in their mid-30's, which makes patiently building this team impossible.

And that's kind of personified by Jesperi Kotkaniemi right now. It was asinine rushing him into the NHL last year as a gangly 18 year-old kid, and that's becoming even more apparent this year. This is a guy that probably should have been left in Europe for another year or two, spent another year in the AHL and then graduated to the NHL once he'd become a legit top-line player in those leagues.

Instead, the Habs opted for the Jesse Puljujarvi development path for him, because that's what happened when you have a GM who's top concern is his short-term job security, which means what's best for the team or individual young players over the long haul goes on the back-burner.

A good portion of us have been pretty damn on-point, actually.

The overarching sentiment from a lot of us (including myself) is that the roster as constructed had a lot of potential to be good, but we were incredibly pessimistic about the team's chances of doing anything except losing in the first round again with Mike Babcock still running the bench.

Now if this roster goes on to fall flat on their faces under Keefe the rest of the way and/or they don't get anywhere in the playoffs again, then go ahead and serve up a big platter of crow for us. But so far, so good in a small sample size.

Depends. If they eat money and he rebounds he is moveable, but if he rebounds the habs won't move him.

I question how "easy" it'd be to move Price. Whatever shine there still is attached to his name, I question how many teams there are out there that would be philosophically on board with paying a goalie $10M+ long-term. Particularly to a 32 year-old goalie until he's 38 years old.

That said, it only takes one GM. But then it'd also have to be a team/city Price would be willing to waive his NMC to go to, and it'd have to be a team that's trying to win right now but has a gaping hole in their starting goalie position.

One destination that pops into mind though: Seattle. It'd land BC-boy Price close to his home province, and maybe Seattle would want to follow the Vegas blueprint of starting off the franchise with an established big-name veteran star in net.
 
Very interesting idea. I wonder if the Seattle 1st for him straight up could happen. There’d be a hesitation for sure though to trade the franchise’s first draft pick ever.
 
Since 2017-18 season among goalies with 100 + games, Carey Price is 20th in sv% at .908. He's between Mike Smith and Jimmy Howard.
 
I’m not a huge Price fan at all, but I do think the shit team in front of him impacts his numbers, and that he still has that name cache around the league that has him as the “best goalie in the world” with many.

Eh? Montreal would have to give up their 1st to move Price...not the other way around. 32 yrs old, significant injur history, more recent history of being a bad starter rather than a good starter and maybe the most toxic contract in the league (though Bobrovsky's is pretty fucking close)

I think with any other team, for sure. But with an expansion team coming in, with the most important position really being goaltender for them, things are a bit different. You want to have an experienced goalie who will be able to keep you respectable if all else fails. Just about everyone in the hockey world still thinks Price is the best, or top three or whatever. The expansion team has no cap issues and can fit in his contract without making a move. In fact it may help them reach the cap floor. If Montreal can keep up the illusion that Price is still top dog, they should be able to extract something. If not their 1st, then something else of some value. I can't envision a situation where they'd have to give Seattle more to dump Price on them.

Now all of this is just thinking out loud. In reality, would Price accept a trade to an expansion team? Highly unlikely. Would Bergevomit even really entertain trading Price when we all know his goal is to make the playoffs and never rebuild? Also improbable. So Montreal is probably stuck with Pricey boy until some perfect situation magically appears, or, more likely, he retires.
 
Would Vancouver consider Price? Not familiar with their cap structure/current goaltending but he would sure as hell waive to go there.

And yeah, Montreal has to add some goodies/eat money to get a deal like that done. Getting a 1st rounder for him is a pipe dream.
