Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Anyways, buying and selling could look remarkably similar this year.

Both could include Barrie, ceci, and one of kappy/aj/kerfoot moved out.

The difference is what comes back in. A top pair dman, or picks

A win tomorrow and splitting the two after while sustaining these solid post-keefe nerd stats would even make me quite optimistic.

I think we're going to move up in the standings based on what I'm seeing in the underlying metrics under Keefe, which have been good. how far is another matter but it looks like we're going to end up in the 11-20 group of teams.

Just to be clear, this is what I expect too.

Problem is even if they continue to play great luck is a far bigger factor to results in even a 40-50 game sample size. So while two of the next three (while beating buffalo) makes me optimistic, nothing is close to guaranteed. Their shitty start only leaves even more up to luck with a far smaller sample and a far higher win % required the rest of the way.

But theoretically if they keep playing like they have they could do it, and could potentially do even far better than that.

Luck is made.

They play consistently well, which they have been, and the results will come. They already are.

Now the one thing that could tip the scales, especially in those 1 goal, ~50% xgf games (in addition to top tier goaltending) is elite special teams. Early results look good with Keefe but need more PPs please.

Just gotta start taking more penalties, amirite?!

We should've just made the change to Keefe in the offseason.

If we miss by a couple points we're going to be thinking "What if..." all damn summer.

Yeah if they miss by a couple points, that means they played like a top 5 hockey team under Keefe. Would hurt a lot.

Missing the playoffs means losing valuable experience. Even though I can live with it if things are going in the right direction, these guys need it more than I do lol.

Unless the Leafs match one of Boston or NYI, even Buffalo's streaks, it's going to be tough, but not as tough as most years thanks to all the mediocrity.

Here's to mediocracy!

If they legit have top tier special teams? Honestly probably. Games played at mostly 5 on 5 tend to have a lot more varied results. Teams with super elite skill are often a lot better than others primarily because of special teams. That's where talent shines through. Having an xgf% of 52% doesn't create a 110+ point team - it's the other things like special teams and goaltending that separates them.

We're at a 104 point pace under Keefe so far.

The main thing that gives me hope is that I keep basing what kind of pace we'll need to play at to make it based on 98 points (106 points the rest of the way) but Buffalo and Tampa are both only on pace for 94 and 93 points right now so...

Yeah makes me think 96 or 97 points could do it in the end. For me, continuing at 104 point pace could get them in. But as I said, they could still potentially miss despite playing consistently like a top tier team with a real coach. And giving up a 1st rounder in the process. Fuck me.

To me, making it in is really not that much of a concern. No point in making it only to be dusted in the 1st round. They need to be playing at a level where they can sustain success against good teams in the playoffs. Otherwise what, we get 5-6 playoff games lasting an additional 2 weeks? Who cares? Especially when you have been out in round 1 three years straight already.

If they make it they would have to be playing consistently elite hockey from now till the end. I wouldn't want to face them if I'm any other team.
