Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Based on conversations that I've had with professional refs, I can can say with absolute certainty that they manage games. And as Preston says, it's usually for self preservation. In the end, it's easier to manage the score by calling penatlies, than it is to manage a bench clearing brawl in a heavily lop-sided game.

Thing is, there's a mechanism for dealing with this: Misconducts and match penalties. Both have automatic suspension mechanisms built in to the structures of the penalty types. Fucking use them. If a team getting mollywhopped can't maintain some semblance of composure of multiple muppets lose their shit, they'll enjoy the 1+ games off thinking about their stupidity.

I've heard this excuse before for why the game doesn't get called properly and it's horseshit. You don't alter the rules because "this idiot might do something stupid", you call the game the way it's supposed to be called and then heap additional punishment on whoever can't handle being expected to follow the fucking rules.

There’s never going to be a bench-clearing brawl in this day and age. Not with automatic 10-game suspensions for every player who hops off the bench to join the fray.

And if the game starts getting out of hand, like ME says, start tossing people out of the game.

It’s one thing to use “game management” as a means of self-preservation in a beer league game, or in a low-level minor-pro league. But it shouldn’t be a thing at the NHL level.

Yup. At the very least, managing game works in minor hockey and is the best way for refs to avoid taking violent verbal and sometimes physical abuse. I can only speak about my experiences but this was absolutely the case for me.

Anyway, the NHL should be held to a higher standard of course. But when you're taught something and you do it for your entire professional career, to suddenly stop at the highest level may be a lot to ask. They should absolutely do it and it should be the message and standard, but the problem runs a bit deeper than just the NHL mandate.

So yes, this may be a reach but I think one of the roots of the issue is verbal abuse in minor hockey that makes managing the game essential for survival.

I still don't get what Peel meant? Did he miss a call early and wanted to make up for it?

how is campbell still employed?

It should be not only a penalty but also a federal crime to insult a referee. These beautiful men and women are putting their lives on the line to officiate hockey games for our entertainment. If properly protected, that would free them up to do an even better job without fear of retaliation from unruly, uncivilized players who apparently cannot contain themselves if the scoreboard is displaying particular numbers.

Wonder if Tim’s partner last night will also be getting a slap on the wrist for being caught on his mic saying “yeah I know“ as Tim was explaining the call to him??

Refs also cover for each other's shitty calls, and absolutely have vendetta's against certain players. The ref huddles are less about "getting it right", and more about getting everyone on the same page to explain the situation to the benches.

if they actually just enforced the rules, and did so consistently for a stretch of time, everyone would just adapt.

it is pretty amazing looking back in hindsight and reflecting on the amount of verbal abuse grown adults threw at me as a teenager refereeing fucking bantam house league hockey.

To be fair to refs in any sport, they are psychologically manipulated by players/coaches both by getting chatted up pre-game and then screamed at by at least one bench anytime a call is made. And players/coaches know that this works.

If not for fighting, ice-related issues - it would be interesting to see how the game would change if the refs worked behind the glass.
