I think they associate it with Canada Er go socialism and are too redneck to realize hockey is fast football/arena football on ice. A no btainer that it should be the NA second sport.

There's plenty of appealing things about hockey for rednecks too, though. Out of all the major sporting leagues in North America, hockey is the whitest, has the most retrograde management and the least amount of involvement in progressive political causes. And there's also the fact that nobody kneels during anthems and no NHL championship team turned down an invitation to the Trump White House.

To elaborate on leaf gm....the NBA moved into second after football because the black youth market brought it up...but now all of the racist white folks think these guys are spoiled....they make too much money and then still will kneel, or strike for police brutality... Guys like harden don't help either. Have you seen the video where da baby gave him 250000 cash for his birthday. White people don't like that shit.
Baseball has become the sport for old people that know that even though the players are Hispanic and black, they still have some white stars and their whole management structure is rich old white people. The way they like it.
I hope that helps a bit on that highlighted part. If you want me to explain the first half with the association of Canada and socialism I can but this also leads to another train of thought that if Austin Mathews were to leave, it would only be for a new York or......that's it. NHL is and will remain regional but competitive with anything that isn't the NFL within its natural regions. Efforts to grow the game in warm weather states has largely failed though there are some stable franchises there, so fuck it.
MLB is slowly sliding back into a race with NHL and shortly, MLS. Old white people don't like the NBA....but they never have and they don't matter. NBA is a juggernaut to the demos that culture and marketers care about.
NFL is its own thing though and will remain the king for a long, long time.
