Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

God. Lebrun spent a solid 2-3 years trying to manifest a Nylander-for-Pesce trade into existence. The man was obsessed.

And I think he eventually gave up because he came to the conclusion Pesce was too valuable, rather than the other way around.
And once he did that, many fans started to assume Pesce was hot shit and desperately wanted him.

Atlantic Update:

"Good" Teams:

FLA: #4 pts%, #18 xgf% ALL, #11 xgf% 5v5
TOR: #11 pts%, #7 xgf% ALL, #15 xgf% 5v5
TBL: #14 pts%, #13 xgf% ALL, #14 xgf% 5v5
BOS: #19 pts%, #14 xgf% ALL, #20 xgf% 5v5

Panthers keep winning even if they're not playing nearly as well as they have before. We'll see which of those numbers catches up to which.

Can't really say the Leafs deserve better so far, but given that the biggest issue so far is 5v5 scoring.....that's something that is probably likely to improve significantly going forward.

The Bolts are decent and are probably playing at their level. I don't see much more upside for them beyond being where they are.

Bruins are definitely not as good this year, but seem to be getting their game back a bit lately. They'll be in the playoffs picture until the end.

"Bad" Teams:

OTT: #15 pts%, #10 xgf% ALL, #5 xgf% 5v5
BUF: #22 pts%, #23 xgf% ALL, #21 xgf% 5v5
DET: #20 pts%, #27 xgf% ALL, #27 xgf% 5v5
MTL: #31 pts%, #29 xgf% ALL, #31 xgf% 5v5

Sens are in a playoffs position and their stats say they've been more unlucky than lucky so far. Still can't pick them ahead of TBL/BOS but they should at least make a real run at them this year.

Sabres are probably at their deserved level. Not horrendous but not good enough. Not sure where any improvement comes from here.

Wings aren't in awful position, but their underlyings are legit terrible. We'll see if the vaunted Talbot/Lyon duo can keep them afloat for much longer.

Habs lol.

Canes are trickier to track because they are very detailed in how they use guys i think.

I always doubted he was doing the heavy lifting there.

Their dzs-ozs splits don't help much but still show the Slavin-Burns combo getting slightly tougher usage:

Burns -0.9
Slavin -1.0
Pesce -1.2
Skjei -1.5
Orlov -4.0
Chatfield -4.2

And i'm guessing if we were to look at actual player matchups, the Slavin-Burns duo would be even heavier against top lines than the zone usage suggests.

Last year main pairings;

Slavin-Burns: 1175min, 58.0xgf%, 58.4gf%
Skjei-Pesce: 988min, 52.8xgf%, 48.1gf%
Orlov-Chatfield: 842min, 59.1xgf%, 60.7gf%

This year:

Slavin-Burns: 221min, 59.4xgf%, 49.4gf%
Orlov-Chatfield: 226min, 60.6xgf%, 66.6gf%
Gost-Walker: 183min, 68.4xgf%, 68.2gf%

Slavin -9.6dzs%
Burns -8.7dzs%

Orlov -1.7dzs%
Chatfield -1.6dzs%

Walker -9.9dzs%
Gost -8.5dzs%

not many dzone starts for the team this year.

They are elite at identifying traits that work in their system.

Look at that D outside of Slavin. Burns, Orlov, Chatfield, Ghost and Walker? Teams weren’t lining up for any of those guys and they’re the best defensive team in the league.

Same goes for guys like Skjei, De Angelo.

Their D is built on players other teams didn’t really want. Who else was giving up a 1st for Skjei or paying Orlov $7 mill or taking on Burns contract?

Tuevo is overrated but he still made sense for Chicago on that deal to give Bedard at least something that resembles a top 6 forward

Luke Richardson might be a psycho though. Bolting Lucas Reichel to 4LC at Pat Maroon has been seen on PP2

Smart regime , they dont overpay the players that dont fit the system

They draft and develop their own core

Orlov and Burns will be replaced with other options

Not so different from the Leafs in the end. Few extra rounds won, but long-time elite regular season team with 0 cups to show for it. Maybe things change with the nerd running the ship alone now.

Good post I think Tulsky will do a good job
