Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Pretty much. Dissect the shit out of it all we want but as of today, the only logical conclusion is he doesn't want to sign with the current make up of the team or his wife wants out

Do you think hes holding out for an extra 7.2 million?

If he wanted to maximize earnings, he would already be signed to a 2-3 yr extension for the current max, and then he would bend Edmonton over for whatever the max is going to be at the 115+ million dollar cap that's expected by then, for the full 7 years.

I have a tough time buying into this logic. Again, none of this is a reason to hold up a deal

“He can command whatever he wants in his next contract. It’s a blank cheque from the Oilers. It’s McDavid who decides what he makes next if he decides to sign an extension in Edmonton. Just don’t be surprised if it’s not for as much as Kaprizov’s $17 million,” LeBrun wrote on Thursday regarding a new contract for McDavid.

One reason is that it’s probably going to be a shorter-term deal (if he signs). But the other, and this is genuine and paramount for McDavid, is that he would want the Oilers to have as much ability as possible to keep adding pieces around him.”

That last line imo is what makes the Leafs a likely destination even aside from the hometown, the wife's hometown, biggest market for endorsements, etc.

This exact roster that we have right now that went 7 games with Florida last year, would be completely intact even if McDavid asked for ~18 million or something. There's a reasonable argument for this group being as good as Edmonton is with Connor. If Connor is playing GM in his head and asks himself which team is better with him on it, the answer is really obvious.

we're already at the point in time where, if he did suddenly decide to sign, it would be reasonable to ask "well then why did you say/do X if you were just going to sign"

such as the "no term" comment. why in the fuck would you say something like that.

and, assuming it happens during the year or down the road prior to July 1st, why would you drag the EDM fanbase over the coals for that long only to sign the 2 year deal or whatever that everyone expected anyway. because no matter what the contract re-upping with the oilers ends up being, he could have signed that exact same deal at any time and there was no real apparent reason to wait into the season for it. there has never been anything to really negotiate in this case.

unless, of course, he simply doesn't want to sign there. Occam's razor and all that.
