Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Why is it so hard to buy that he or his partner dont want to live in Alberta?
Because they own that town to a degree they could never achieve in Toronto. His wife has her own business there, and he has his coach, his manager, h8s everything. Nothing happens on or off the ice without his approval. He would never get that anyplace else and certainly not in Toronto.

And, of course, the most glaringly obvious thing he could never get in Toronto is a championship, the one thing he desires above all other things.

But he can get one of those un Dallas or Denver or Miami.

Because these teams are just tax write offs for billionaire hedge fund managers. It doesn't matter if a city has any fans. Pro sports teams are just Trojan horses for real estate scams designed to separate taxpayers from their money.

True, but NHL will gladly give anyone that write-off. They were bragging last year Oklahoma City was interested. Pay and you get a team

Well, anyone in a US television market of any significance, at least. I doubt that Quebec City's money would be any good at the league offices.

They'll talk with anyone about a team. They met with people from New Orleans about the NHL. That city doesn't even support their NBA team.

I’ll assume the only thing that really matters there is LSU football - maybe the Saints get a nod. Same as the Dawgs in Atlanta (though I think the Braves matter somewhat.)

There have been 2 NHL franchises in Atlanta, both abject failures. No one there gives a shit about the sport and they never will. But as long as there are well-heeled business types able to squeeze the taxpayers into building them yet another arena (because, of course, they can't put a team into the "antiquated" State Farm (nee Phillips) Arena, even though it was renovated in 2018, they will keep getting expansion franchises. The real estate is what the grift is all about.

there's this really weird thing where NHL fans are convinced their league is doomed and the cap won't always go up and up.

and then the covid cap reinforced it.

personally i'm convinced that the only reason covid happened was to screw the leafs.

If Mitch always was the problem here, then even with a little more cap flexibility they're still not a championship team. Cap aside Keefe would still get schooled in every playoff matchup.

So many failures traced back to Shanny tbh.
