Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

How do you feel about Suzuki?

Great deal for Nick and the Habs

Nick gets security for life

Habs get cost certainty and a player for his entire prime career

As long as he doesnt regress into a 50-60 point player , this is a home run type move

This is exactly what you do , lock up your young core

You are years away from a trade clause kicking in , and worst case other teams would take him in a trade

I dunno, call me old-fashioned, but I think that contract is fucking insane.

He has the tools for 30-40 goals a year

Way better than the disgusting contracts handed out to Skinner , Gally , Okposo , Hayes , etc...

This is the risk you take on young core pieces , not the vets who barely make it to year 3 of a 7-8 deal .

I mean... I don't see much difference between his contracts and the ones you listed.

He's turning 25 in two months, played in 145 career NHL games prior to last season, and had 18 total goals.

Suddenly, he has a breakout, come-out-of-nowhere season and scores 38.

He was under contract for one more season and would have become an RFA. I don't understand why there was the need to extend his contract.

But hey, it ain't my team.

Yeah I’m always weary of those one year wonders. Wait at least for repeats before the big bucks
Yup. And if he posts another 38 goal season and asks for more money than he initially did, then shit, good for him. He gets paid even more. But it's not like he'll go from $7.1M to $9M if he repeats, he might get a bump to $7.75M to $8M. If you have 35-40 goal player who happens to be a giant, you don't worry about paying a little extra.

The more I look at it and look at comparables, the more insane I think the contract is. Jesus Christ.

Alex Debrincat is the happiest hockey player on earth after seeing that deal. He's going to get $9M+ because of it.
