Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

While I understand Bettman is a henchman of the owners and he'll do their bidding, how he's seemingly just sat on his fucking hands while doing nothing except wrong decision after wrong decision is just astonishing and a credit to the sport itself.

Hockey was utterly unwatchable for a decade. Watch late 90s, early 2000s hockey. It's fucking awful. He's the guy who resided over that and allowed it to happen. He's also the guy who, regardless of your opinion on the subjects, is sitting on his hands when it comes to fighting (and violence in general) in hockey and to the pride issue. He's just playing the role of Switzerland and not taking one side or another, while waiting for things to cool over.

There are many things to criticize the NFL over, but the majority of the time, the second there's a problem they try to address it. Not to mention, they've realized a long time ago that while defense is necessary to have a good product, the people want to see offense. They're able to market both teams and their superstars at the same time,.

I can't wait to get a new, fresh face. But if he's just another puppet, then it ultimately doesn't matter.

And I agreed with you about the 22%, but you claimed « way lower than 4th » without ever backing it up.
I said lower than 4th. There were lots of articles right around the time of the World Cup claiming that Soccer was now the no. 4 sport in the U.S., including one in the NYT that I read.

Just the fact that it's even debatable is terrible. The owners are clearly only concerned about franchise evaluation. What I don't get is how could it possibly be bad to change with the times? More popularity = more money.

4th? Way lower than that. Soccer is now the clear 4 here. Hockey is a regional sport here, always will be. That’s fine.
You said « way lower ».

Both soccer and hockey have been growing in popularity. I think they’re fairly close 4th and 5th, depending which part of the country you look at but there is absolutely no comparison between the NHL and MLS.

In Minny, Wisconsin, Michigan & Northeast “college & prep school hockey” is very very popular even ahead of soccer & dare I say football which skews the rest of the country given population density

College hockey is top-2 definitely ahead of baseball, football and soccer from what I’ve witnessed in the Northeast

The Leafs have barely won a playoff round, let alone a Cup, since the cap was introduced.

It's doing what it's supposed to do.

The cap system is fine

80+ mil is plenty of money to figure out how to make 20+ players millionaires

Hockey is the toughest of the big 4 leagues to manage your roster/cap with the least flexibility to deal with

Regimes have to be smarter and make tough decisions ahead of time

IMO most of the issues stem from handing out shit contracts that hurt a teams flexibility

Teams are too scared to let players walk and simply kick the fucken can down the road

If your handing 17 mil to 11 and 31 knowing those contracts were doomed 5 minutes after the ink dried , you deserve the BS that follows

we need cap exceptions for homegrowns like the NBA

I'd do minor tweaks mostly on buyouts to have less impacts on the cap. Let's say with a cap penalty of 50% with the option of keeping the same contract length or spreading it to double the years.

For example buying out Gallagher would either have a 3.75M cap penalty for 4 years or 1.625 for 8 years.
