Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

I know that's the common belief but I don't know if it's an absolute truth. I think they just need to up their skill level overall while keeping their depth and they might have a shot. Kinda like the Blues, and yes Pietro is a 1D, Tarasenko a top W and O'Reilly that year was playing like a 1C, but none of them were truly elite, depending on your definition.
The Blues Cup was a one-off, quasi-fluke. They’d accomplished nothing since then.

The thing is the were very competitive for years like the Sharks and others

In that 8 team mix that if all goes well can win , not a powerhouse but not a team that fluked their way

If I recall , they played playoff hockey for 3 months to make the playoffs

But they had the combo of right core pieces to work with while not elite

They've also navigated their window correctly, offloading their aging stars for picks and prospects instead of offering multi-years rich contracts, setting themselves up for a quick turnaround.

Armstrong did a good job trading and drafting

Kyrou, Thomas, Buchnevich and others isnt leaving the cupboards bare

3 firsts help out and I dont think they are done dumping contracts

The Parayko deal will bit them in the ass very soon

Habs should have done the same gut job with Gally and Price

yeah accorsing to Wehaveian logic, Seattle is built for failure as they will never win 16 post season games
A couple of things...

First and foremost, we don't know that Seattle isn't capable of winning 16 postseason games. 5 down, 11 to go.

Secondly, a team like the Kraken doesn't have the same expectations therefore its definition of what constitutes a successful season is altogether different from that of the Habs, who must either win or die. For teams that play in arenas where they hang banners for divisional championships and Presidents Trophies, simply participating in the post-season makes them "successful". It would be a sick joke to apply similar low standards to a team like the Habs.

or maybe your expectations for us are insanely high?
As Todd Bertuzzi famously said, "It is what it is." We don't make the rules, we merely enforce them. The standard is the standard. Don't like it? Root for a shit team with more modest goals.

You strive for perfection hoping to catch up to excellence. The Habs didn't even bother leaving the starting blocks for a decade because "everything is hard".

Pavelski, now Draisaitl with four-goal games in a loss.

Hadn't happened in the playoffs in 30 years and now happens on back-to-back nights. Crazy.

If anyone needed more proof how much hockey is a team sport, here it is. Edmonton really isn't a team at all, as said. With two dominant stars like McDavid and Draisetl playing the way they are, and considering the talent on and quality of the remaining teams in the race, Edmonton should by now be running away with the playoffs. The fact is, Seattle is actually one win closer to the cup than Edmonton at this point. It is also yet one more example of how bad the quality of the Oilers management team has been for a generation, and how it is unable to surround the two stars with any kind of support players or support system. Even if they do win in the end, it will be in spite of ,and not in any way due, to the management team.

The Oilers finally did something smart by getting Ekholm. But he's one of six and he might be the only d-man they have that I have any kind of faith in.

The Nurse and Campbell contracts are among the worst deals in the league, not to mention they had given a ridiculous contract to both Barrie and Ceci, before Nashville took Barrie off of their hands.

I'm no fan of The Charlatan, but The Charlatan would have built a real defense if he had inherited that team.
