Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Nurse is as close to useless as I've seen recently. From what I can tell watching him closely over the last couple of months and before the playoffs, he doesn't do anything well.

Maybe people think because of his look and size, that he was a first rounder, and that he has some sisters who play sports, that he is actually in some way effective.

He may be suitable as a $1,000,000 sixth defenceman. And then without the pressure, he could maybe be effective in that role.

why do we expect Russian players to denounce their country/culture? Would we expect Kadri to denounce muslim terrorism, Quinton Hughes to denounce Israeli aggression, Zibanejad to denounce Iran?
I expect them not to tell bald faced lies about how their country is somehow "defending itself" by invading a smaller, weaker neighboring nation.

I always found it funny that what Russia's doing in Ukraine is evil, but what America did in the Middle East is justifiable.

(But I guess there's a politics thread for a reason.)

Most people defend their own, only in North America is it cool to rip on your own. It also isn't a lie if he believes what he is saying. It might be misguided and wrong. You weren't lying when you claimed mask and vax mandates were correct, just misguided by massive govt propaganda.

But I wasn't wrong. Mandates were absolutely correct, as was the punishment meted out to the non-compliant.

And Malkin isn't stupid. He lives in North America so he has access to news that isn't Russian propaganda. He knows the truth, he just doesn't care. That makes him a willing fascist.

You defend your own when you're on the side of the angels. When your own are on the wrong side you call them out. Malkin would be a true Russian patriot if he stood against Putin. Standing with Putin just makes him as bad a fascist as Putin.

Not in my mind.
If America had done nothing in the Middle East the region would be better off today. Of course, that scenario assumes that the USSR would have also done nothing. But way too much of US foreign policy has been cynically propping up murderous dictators simply because they make it easier for US corporations to exploit a nation's resources and labor. All that has achieved is big profits for corporations who outsource labor and profits while turning large swaths of the world's population into zealous anti-Americans hell-bent on its destruction. At least when the USSR would interfere in a country they made no pretenses about being anything other than what they were. But the Americans are always preaching "freedom and democracy" while at the same time propping up oppressive military juntas and megalomaniacal dictators while simultaneously training their secret police in methods for terrorizing and torturing their own people.

America didn't try to keep the land
No, they were happy to install puppets to keep the land for them.

The US also has a bad habit of leaving a military presence in every country into which they set foot to the point where their protest that they aren't imperialistic rings hollow. They still have military bases in Britain and continental Europe even though WW2 ended nearly 8 decades ago. They've had a presence in the Philippines since 1898, which itself was an outcome of the Spanish-American War, in which the US invaded Cuba and today still has its base at Gitmo. The US military only leaves a region if it is evicted from said region like Vietnam or Afghanistan.

Count needs to prepare himself for the eventuality that Kotkaniemi (and Pacioretty, albeit in street clothes) will be hoisting the Cup in a month or so.

I don't think max will qualify to have his name on the cup
Max Pac would need to either have played at least 40 games during the season or some playoff games or finals games to qualify. But if the Canes win he'll be there wearing a suit and celebrating with the team just like any other injured player or black ace.

And let's also not forget that another Max (Domi) might get his name on the Cup this season.

Wouldn’t it be something if NYR go all in to acquire Matthews?
If Matthews moves he will go to a big media market in the US to maximize his endorsement opportunities. Endorsement-wise he can make as much or more money than he ever made as a Leaf if he's wearing a Rangers, Blackhawks, Kings, or Bruins jersey but especially a Rangers jersey. He'd probably also enjoy playing in Vegas.

How can he expect to be the highest paid player in the league when he's nowhere near the best player in the league?
because he has the Leafs by the balls, they agreed to his five year deal knowing that in five years he would want the big money.

In the NFL, is Deshaun Watson the best player, is Lamar Jackson, they get paid the most now, more important is when your contract is up, not if you are the best or not
