Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

^ Also, I was today years old when I found out if you pull your goaler in OT and the other team scores, you lose your point.

Who knew?
I did. A few years after the lockout in 04-05, there was a situation during the final game of the when a team went to OT and they absolutely needed to win to keep their hopes alive for the 8th seed. They ended up pulling their goalie in OT and the other team got the empty net. In the end, the result was moot as the team they were battling against won & they wouldn't have made it even if they won that game.

I appreciate teams that are creative and think outside the box. It’s very hard to get ahead if you’re doing the same thing as everybody else. Going off the beaten path is a gamble, you might build a winner or fail spectacularly. Very interesting to see a team building through trades instead of draft.

The salient point is that the Vegas formula only works for a handful of teams in desirable locations. Vegas can do it, Florida and Tampa can do it, the Kings and Ducks can do it, maybe NY and Chicago can, even the Coyotes can do it. But NO Canadian team can do it, and teams in US markets with harsh winters like Buffalo, Columbus, or Minnesota probably can't do it either.

The desirable teams will have a hard time when your capped out all the time

Vegas had the luxury of starting from scratch and methodically make moves

Its like building house , you can add your choice of flooring and cabinets before installation

Kings cant dump Doughty or PLD easily to make things happen

I think traditional hockey markets like Boston, Chicago and Rangers like to keep their star players long term. Vegas had no problem getting rid of Tuch, Pacioretty for something better. They have no problem getting rid of coaches on a whim, etc. Fast money city.

That’s an easy excuse. Montreal never had any issues retaining players. It’s getting them here in the first place that has been an issue. Even if some players don’t want to come here, there is still many others that do.

Yes, they're called untalented stiffs with no better options available. All Canadian teams are basically the Last Chance Saloon for players who'd rather be someplace else. As soon as players got real free agency (not the bullshit free agency they had when Eagleson was colluding with the owners) Canadian teams were doomed as far as competing for the best players and winning Cups. If Matthews and McDavid hadn't been drafted by the Leafs and Oilers neither one of them would ever play for those teams, at least not until they were basically washed up.
