Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

We're talking about recovery that should have Evander Kane on the LTIR until... Around April 18th 2025. After that, though, he'll be as good as new and ready to go.

...Oh, you mean the playoffs start a few days after that and the salary cap is no longer in effect? Funny how that works, right?
Salary cap shenanigans are no longer the exclusive preserve of Vegas and Tampa.

Which loophole is that? Because if it's the "Play 0 regular season games, while being on LTIR all season, then be magically ready for game 1 of the playoffs" one, then they haven't closed it.
Thought they changed it to require 1 game to be eligible for playoffs?

Some GMs voice their opinions at their bi-annual meeting, but those close minded idiots couldn't get past the mental gymnastics of setting the ground rules for what a possible abuse might be.

(That's mostly conjecture, but yeah, they haven't done anything yet to change the LTIR rules.)

Most recent article I could find about it:

Not so secretly: I think the only people who really care are the fans who believe in parity.

The players definitely want the LTIR shit to continue, more of 'em are getting paid.

The owners don't particularly care, the insurances pay a chunk of the salaries for injured players (usually) and they already have controlled costs for the most part.

It's about expansion. Without his "pet" franchises succeeding they'd limited expansion.
And that too flies in the face of another Canadian franchise. Bettman doesn't want any of them to have too much success. It doesn't generate any new money. But if Vegas or Utah or Seattle win the Cup it's a bonanza.

why do you care, your ultimate goal for the NHL is to ensure the Leafs never win, Bettman helps you in that regard

correlation does not mean causation,
As soon as there was no internal pressure to win caused by the anxiety over the possibility of the Nordiques winning, the Habs took their foot off the gas for the next 20 years. Anxiety at the possibility of the Leafs winning wasn't enough for them. Only their provincial rivals could trigger them.
