Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

No issue get your bag , 64 mil for a goalie who has never played 50 games in a season or won anything

WTF this is a great bag , shut up and sign

If the Bruins grossly low balled you I get it , especially for a volatile position where so many goalies fuck up year after year
Bruins trying to negotiate in public. Fuck them.

I've mentioned it before, but it's always easy to see which people here are the older folk with the "shut up and play" attitude towards the athletes.

It's also fairly easy to know those who understand the concept of leverage.
Now, now.:) I'm probably the oldest guy here (68). I almost always side with the athlete in such matters. Maybe it comes from being a union guy all my working life.

But I have an issue with the "draft dodgers"-Lindros,etc. I'm old school that way.

People of any age can understand “leverage” or any other concept, for that matter.
I didn't say they couldn't.

There are plenty of people here, both young & old, who don't understand why athletes take certain stances in regards to their careers because they're getting paid to play a game.

I've always said that I'm a hypocrite on this subject. I want the athletes to get paid, while at the same time conceding that sports are better when athletes don't have a ton of rights, which directly affects their ability to get paid. The NHL's contract and cap structure make the league inherently anti-fan, to a point that it's far & away the worst in major North American sports.

A lot of players will never truly have leverage to take meaningful decisions in their careers. It's why I had no problem with Adam Fox, Zach Hyman, Cutter Gauthier or Rutger McGroarty telling the teams that drafted them to fuck off. I feel bad for the fans of those teams, but at the moment those players decided to take that stance, it could have been the first and only time they have actual leverage and power in how they would like to shape their careers.

I only say "Shut up and sign" when it's a Habs player. A player on any other team? Hold out for every penny and force your team to either make a trade from a position of weakness or put them into salary cap hell.

I disagree. The cap ensures that rich but stupid teams like the Leafs can't use their financial advantages to just throw money at their mistakes every year. They have to eat them and suffer with them. The haven't won a damn thing since the cap was instituted and that suits me fine.

Not getting paid for a year is a good way to piss away leverage

WTF are they trying to do ...reset the goalie market when he hasnt proven he can handle 50+ games a year and was a 1A/1B for years

If we are talking leverage nobody had more than Pasta who carries that offence on his back

neither have we... but yes I know if you were given an offer of three Canadiens cups before you die BUT the Leafs have to win 1 first, you would turn it down

We haven't won because, since the Nordiques left for Denver, the Habs have (until recently) pinched pennies in the one area where no salary cap exists: the front office. As soon as there was no provincial rival against which the Habs could compete for the hearts and minds of Quebec hockey fans, ownership was happy to hire mental midgets to run their franchise. That's why the Habs don't win. The salary cap has zero to do with it. I said it for almost the entire decade prior to the arrival of HuGo: if you want to stop the losing, stop hiring nitwits and halfwits to run your team.
