Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Bettman’s legacy will be very mixed. Sure, he spread hockey to “non-traditional” markets and kids are playing the game there but non-fans in the U.S., and also many hockey fans, have no idea who any hockey players, including McDavid and McKinnon, the two biggest stars of the sport, are. That’s inexcusable in 2025. Social media should make that make that easy. Next Commish should be a sports marketing guy.

A significant part of Bettman's legacy is the This Is Fine meme:

Bettman inherited a sport that was third in popularity in the States and that has seen itself fall to fourth, possibly even fifth now with the uptick of soccer, in popularity.

He's a commissioner that allowed the dead puck era to happen and was content to see the game deteriorate with it.

He's a commissioner that allowed hockey to be broadcast on the Outdoor Life Network when they returned from the 2005 lockout.

Jesus Christ there's so much I could write, but good riddance whenever he leaves.

Hockey was third? 4th and a distant 4th. (And in term of eyeballs/time we’re being generous by combining pro and NCAA football and basketball.)

Now 5th.

Hockey is HUGE in regional pockets - Northeast & Minny, but there’s a caveat… college & even high school hockey have as or stronger following (collectively) in those regions as Wild or Bruins
Regional pockets always existed but MLB/NBA /NFL will rule the eye balls and TV dollars

The game has grown and revenues and tv dollars have gone up

Is the NHL behind Nascar/MLS/College revenues and or viewership
