Apparently mental health - Laine was reportedly very close to his father who passed away suddenly 10-months after being dealt to CBJ

During his Jets days, there were reports he was big time into Fortnite - vets didn’t like it because he didn’t care to go out drinking etc w the team preferring to stay home to game

He is the type of player about to get squeezed as stars eat more cap earlier

A decent second liner but not worth locking up at crazy money and term
 
He didn't (and won't in the future) "get squeezed".

He just had no negotiating power with a team he didn't want to stay with long-term.

When he becomes a UFA in two years and 12 teams are willing to offer him 6-7 years, he'll get his money,
