Canes Sign Kotkaniemi To Offer Sheet/Habs Don't Match

Oh please. This was Dundon's ego, stop spinning it like it wasn't. Enjoy the player.

There are still people out there that really think this was solely an effort by tghe

Still people out there that think this was mostly an effort to jam up the Habs and not the Canes jumping at a chance to graba player they wanted and tried to trade for? Don Waddell doesn't do anything without the whole Canes front office's involvement. This was a calculated move to try to acquire a player the Canes wanted (possibly as a replacement for Trocheck next season or Jordan Staal the season after that).

The Canes pulled off the acquisition, now we will see how it works out. If you think this was just the Canes trying to mess with the Habs, well, you are wrong.
Without the Aho offer sheet this never happens, disagree?

I don't think it was a spite move per se. I think they like the player and it was a "bonus" that it was the Habs. And of course, the pettiness of the statement and signing bonus. Which was fun for their fans, so no biggie.

I was never mad about it... and I think the Habs did the right thing though.

The Canes don't screw with their cap situation unless they really thought the player would make the team better. Its comical that people think that wasn't the most important reason for this offer sheet. That is was the Habs is just gravy.

Habs drop the other shoe. They trade the better of their 2022 first rounders and their 2024 2nd rounder to Arizona for Christian Dvorak. If either or both of the 2022 first rounders are in the top 10, Arizona gets the worse of the first rounders.

Love it. Habs are an improved team.

When life gives ya lemons.... make lemonade.

Good job by them

I concur on that.. but that's what allowed them to leverage this situation this way..
Pretty good deal for Montreal.. and protected... honestly nice move there.(Dvorak)

A first and third round pick seems a lot to give up, but for a proven player helps even things out. I hope he flourishes in Carolina's system. It's not like there haven't been tons of high round draft pick busts here. Carolina had better sign Martin Necas before he becomes a RFA and this offer sheet mess starts all over again.

Is Carolina the landing spot for Finns, or what?

I’m happy for KK, just a 21 year old kid still, he would have been eaten alive in Montreal at that $6.1 million dollar number…hopefully he can fit in somewhere in the mix in the top six here and find a consistent game. I’m not expecting any miracles from him, just find your game and become a better player moving forward, not our money to whine about him being overpaid for now.

So I've been reading bits and pieces coming out about this and while rumors things are starting to make more sense. Apparently KK wanted out of Montreal and that's a big deal for Bergevin so he tried to trade him. Canes made an offer that Bergevin didn't like and then sent the offer.

That scenario makes sense and in that case this worked out for everyone.

That the Canes tried to trade for KK came out last Sunday, but everyone was so wrapped up in the revenge theory that it got missed. If the Canes offer was less than the offer sheet compensation, maybe Bergevin made an educated guess that the offer would come in. And if that’s the case, he maximized the return on the asset.

Yes, it’s a lot of speculation, but like you said, it worked out for everyone.
