Canes Sign Kotkaniemi To Offer Sheet/Habs Don't Match

It's plausible.

There's definitely more here. Bergevin is also a my way or highway type guy.

Many Habs fans doing everything they can to convince themselves that Christian Dvorak is a worthy #2 center and is better than KK ever will be.

Fortunately for the Habs actual cash matters so little because Dvorak is getting paid $5.075, $3.45, then $5.75 million x2. Habs banking on upside I think just like the Canes with KK, but you would think the Habs got a sure fire 50 point guy the way many of their fans are acting. Maybe...maybe not.

I had posted a number of weeks ago that with the Canes moves this off-season, this was going to be the biggest "proof of concept" season yet for Dundon/Waddell/Tulsky. Then they went out and pulled off this KK move. It will be fascinating to see how this all plays out.

Dvorak is currently the better player. The Canes didn't try to poach him because they needed him to win though, he's got a very high ceiling.

What I do know is that he likely wasn't going to reach that potential in Montreal so I'll take the consolation prize. I far more ticked at the pick in the first place.

We just had 2 shortened seasons in a row. Last year his pace was 25g 45p. and the year before was 21g 45p pace. For a 2 way center that kills penalties.... for 4 x $4.45.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect similar production with better linemates.

I'm happy with that. KK probably has a higher ceiling, but lower floor.

Who knows if that part of the story ever really gets told, but if KK or his agent had already decided that the ship had sailed in Montreal and they wanted out, I guess the offer sheet exit was a quicker route out of town for them than waiting for Bergy to get the trade he liked best. Let’s not forget that part of the reasoning Aho signed his offer sheet was he wanted the whole new contract thing to be over quick and not long and drawn out.

The Canes hosted a presser with Waddell and KK. Nothing earth shattering, one of the reporters tried to get Waddell to admit there were discussions about an extension down the road, Waddell didn’t take the bait. The $20 signing bonus was a group decision. KK wouldn’t trash the Habs, he did say he was disappointed in the way he was developed. He has not spoken with RBA but exchanged texts this morning. Waddell said that KK will play on the wing.

One thing that did come out is the confirmation that Gardiner needs back and hip surgery and will miss the season, so he’s headed to LTIR. Canes are about $2.5 million short of qualifying to take advantage of Gardiner’s $4 million cap hit.

This is a mistake. You'll find out why soon enough. My thinking on this is he plays wing until a center is moved or leaves next season.
Barring injury, he’ll probably spend the season on the wing, unless Trocheck can effectively move out.

I always liked the kid and I'll be keeping an eye on his progress. His dad is the Finnish National Coach, or was, and he is very well coached. I believe he and his dad decided that the Habs style of development doesn't suit them. I wonder why what with our stellar record in the first round and all.

That's my thought as well. He's Trocheck or Staal's replacement. At least in hope. He can still fail in that however.

I don’t know if you have a subscription to The Athletic, but Sara Civian, who covers the Canes, tweeted out an Arpon Basu story from 2018 about KK today. At the time, his father was the coach at Assat Pori but I don’t think he’s the coach anymore.

So KK won’t wear #15? If this is true, and the team tweeted that he’d wear #15 over the weekend, he’ll be the first player in WhalerCanes franchise history to wear #82.

Sorry KK, Canes cannot change the contract to pay you $6,100,082. That is against CBA rules, but nice try! :)
Maybe it's for the next contract? Got to get the 67 extra dollars :)
And it'd have been $6,100,102. The Aho Signing bonus had to stay.
