On purposeOn pins and needles
Not sure kids these days think about these things like folks our age would have. Personally, I know very few folks down our way that still are hacked with Aho about his signing the offer sheet. Maybe it’s different in the crucible that’s Montreal. On purpose
This isn't about the Canes waiting for Bergevin. This is about a 21 year old kid listening to parents and agents thinking WTF already.
Let him stew.
You forget what it's like being 21. He's excited for the cash sure but he's sitting on pins and needles. Not the Agents, Not Waddel or Dundon, KK. Guaranteed he's wondering why they haven't said a word. Not sure kids these days think about these things like folks our age would have. I agree Bill, it's really not that a big of deal either way...and I think as well in the end the Habs will match it. The one part that seems to be lost in all of this story which I really cannot believe is how many so called hockey fans that follow the game closely really think that this is 100% driven by spite and pettiness and nothing to do with the player or his potential. The comments sections of most of these hockey based websites seem to have the majority truly believing the Canes and Dundon are more worried about payback and spite than what this offer sheet was all about from a hockey standpoint and a business standpoint. And for anyone who thinks that KK will simply play the QO carousel and make himself a $6 million dollar man every year...that's just fools gold, in the end, your play will dictate the long term contract you eventually get and almost any young NHL player will tell you that a long term contract and the security it brings is what most players want.Meh, I'm not waiting or worried about it; I've figured since Saturday they'll bite the bullet and match it, so beyond the initial thoughts about where he might fit in the lineup (I say he'd start at 2L on Trocheck's line) and all the guffaws about the trolling aspects of how it went down, it's "no news" for me for now. Wake me up on Saturday.
Yeah, there's really zero reason to make your decision known before you have to. Especially when they should be out there exploring trade options for a replacement. May as well explore as many options, as thoroughly as possible.Isn't it likely Montreal has long decided what they will do and are just making the Canes stew in it for as long as possible out of spite? If they match, Carolina's cap space is tied up through Saturday, if I remember correctly from the Aho situation. If not, may as well make em wait.
Yep, I wouldn’t notify the league until the absolute last minute it was due.Yeah, there's really zero reason to make your decision known before you have to. You see a bunch of yahoo's claiming that's against the CBA but that is certainly why the $6.1 million could be tied into the overall value of an extension and what Laraque is reporting. Sure, an extension cannot be signed until January 1 of next year, but the chances of the framework of an extension are likely already in place. The million dollar question has to be, how fractured is the relationship between the Habs and the player right now...that would seem what Bergy must be struggling with the most. It will suck to overpay $6.1 million for either team for a year of KK...but how willing is KK to negotiate that more "in-line" priced extension with the new team or his present team?Sara Civian has an article on The Athletic. At the bottom she says that according to Georges Laraque, the Canes already have a multi-year extension on the table at $4 million.
Is Jesperi Kotkaniemi worth $6.1 million to the Hurricanes? His trajectory, fit, and why the signing makes sense anyway
The Hurricanes could be a perfect place for Kotkaniemi to develop, playing alongside talented players without the pressure of Montreal.theathletic.com
Guessing his agent already told him there won’t be anything until the clock runs out. Unless Montreal wants to make a statement on how much they value him.You forget what it's like being 21. He's excited for the cash sure but he's sitting on pins and needles. Not the Agents, Not Waddel or Dundon, KK. Guaranteed he's wondering why they haven't said a word.
I don't expect them to announce their intentions until the final hour type of thing.
I'm pretty sure it is against the CBA to negotiate an extension while inking him to a 1 year deal. You see a bunch of yahoo's claiming that's against the CBA but that is certainly why the $6.1 million could be tied into the overall value of an extension and what Laraque is reporting. I agree, up front it's not supposed to happen, but we all know it probably does. The Kevin LaBanc low-ball contract followed by the much richer extension comes to mind...some NHL observers believe Labanc had this new deal in his pocket when he signed a team-friendly one year deal in the 2019 offseason.I'm pretty sure it is against the CBA to negotiate an extension while inking him to a 1 year deal.
Does it happen? Probably. Is it supposed to happen? No.
Oh ... don't get me wrong. I'm waiting but I'm not worried. I figure there's a decent chance Montreal figures out how to match the sheet, and even if they don't there's a lot of work to do before we get to the end of this road. It's fine either way so far as I'm concerned.Meh, I'm not waiting or worried about it; I've figured since Saturday they'll bite the bullet and match it, so beyond the initial thoughts about where he might fit in the lineup (I say he'd start at 2L on Trocheck's line) and all the guffaws about the trolling aspects of how it went down, it's "no news" for me for now. CM2 is our board CBA guru, so I'll let him take on the technicalities here. I'm pretty sure that's an issue as well, but I certainly don't know for sure. Clearly the Canes had to negotiate the offer sheet with the kid and his agent, but I'm not at all certain of where the line is drawn in terms of what all you can negotiate and when.I'm pretty sure it is against the CBA to negotiate an extension while inking him to a 1 year deal.

F you!!!...I'm gonna be in the wilds of Northern Colorado this weekend...
