Canes Trade for Rantanen, Hall

Most reports indicate that he was asking for Draisaitl's money and term. I'd do that.

Yes he was asking 8 years around 14 per. Pay it. The can afford it. When you get your hands on a player of this caliber, you work it out. Colorado was in a different situation having both MacKinnon and Makar.

Also, I haven’t been this excited to watch the canes in the regular season in quite some time. I love watching this guy play and now he plays for the good guys!

How does Rantanan compare to Guentzel? Seems to have the skillset but also have much more dominant physical ability. Which is exactly the kind of player we needed to add to the top 6. Much harder to push this version of the Canes around with the Staal line and then Rants and Svetch it would seem.

They didn’t resign/keep Guentzel…. So why would they resign/keep Rantanan?

My sense is he’s a more complete player for what we need. Instead of smallish skill player.

Rantanen is in a different league in my opinion. Guentzel is a really good player, Rantanen is a great player and just like Guentzel he turns it up in the playoffs. Something like 100 points in 81 playoff games

He plays a similar style to Svech and almost the same measurables. I’m hoping he can help Svech with his finishing. A few years ago I posted that I was hoping Svech could become Rantanen. He’s still young and now he can learn from the man himself. That’s worth a few million in salary on its own

JT Miller would have been a too old, past his prime acquisition that comes with dressing room issues. Elias Petersson I always hoped would not be the guy the Canes chased as he goes quiet a lot like Necas was known to do for long stretches. Rantanen is on another level compared to some of those other rumored players the Canes were interested in. You didn’t have to lose Jarvis, Svech, Nikishin or even any future first round draft picks to get him…just go lock him up and let him do his thing for 8 1/2 years here.

The skill level on a line of Svech Aho Rantanen is ridiculous. Doesn’t mean they’ll mesh and it will work but man o man. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jarvis on his line if Svech goes into one of his stretches. That could be a very dynamic pairing

Well, Rantanen has first line skill and Staal's size. So, he doesn't really compare to Guentzel at all to be honest. Completely different kind of player. Put it this way, Rantanen is who Carolina wanted Svech to be when he grew up. Except, he's all grown up and has delivered on that promise.

After sleeping on this news, it just feels better and better. Like all have said, I don't think GMET would make this move if the intention wasn't to sign him to a long-term contract. The experience with Guentzel shows the value of acting quickly - and looking back, we will be in a much stronger shape cap-wise, so it is probably a good thing that Guentzel didn't work out.

Per Pierre LeBrun, we were one of the no-trade teams on his list and Moose agreed to waive it.
I bet he's too scared to play with the Finnish Godfather, Sebastian Aho. You don't want to do poorly and have to deal with Aho's bloody anger. You know, things like banning the offending player from the sauna and denying him a platter of smoked fishes.

I saw in his article on The Athletic that Hall waived his NTC but it doesn’t mention that we were on Moose’s.

One thing that stands out though. Rantanen and Guentzel are represented by different agents at the same firm, Octagon. And Rantanen and Draisaitl have the same agent, Andy Scott. Draisaitl’s camp turned down a deferred compensation deal like Jarvis and Slavin signed. So they know how the team negotiates and already turned down a deferred deal.

Also, the deferred compensation isn't some magic spell. If a player doesn't want it, it's not a big deal. It just lets the team eake a few percentage points off the AAV and the player gets his cash either way. It's not like Carolina won't pay a guy market rate unless they can defer 1% or whatever. The hockey media are so freaking baffled by anything even remotely complicated that it's not even funny.

From espn

Carolina Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky said his team has the desire and the financial flexibility to give newly acquired star winger Mikko Rantanen the massive new contract he's seeking ahead of unrestricted free agency this offseason.

That is, if he wants to remain with the Hurricanes.
