Canes Trade for Rantanen, Hall

I also think a deal with Necas was NOT going to get done
I agree. He's one of those good players that teams are willing to overpay for. As much as I liked him on the team, he will not be worth whatever dumb contract he eventually signs. And good for him, man. I will never be mad at a fellow human being that gets paid without them having to harming other human beings.

According to The Athletic (or maybe it was the NYT) there were no pre-trade discussions about any extension. I hope Tulsky learned something from his experience with Guentzel.

Good luck with him then. Good player but I wouldn't want to spend 15-16% of the cap on him. I like the move for this season for sure, I'm just always leery of huge contracts for term.
Yup , Avs can now spread their cap dollars better and still stay competitive

Just wow.

The Canes got bigger, stronger and better right now. That is exactly what many of us have wanted for years come play off time. Sure the price is steep especially if Rantanen turns out to be just a rental but you can never be disappointed when you get the best player by far in a trade.
Gotta sign him cant have another Guentzal loss

Thoughts:

I saw a big swing coming from Tulsky during the season, because there's no reason to play as many Cap games as he's been playing if you're not looking to make a big move. I figured it would be a center, but you certainly can't say Carolina didn't get a needle mover. Because they 100% did.

This is AGGRESSIVE from Carolina. After 6 or 8 years of sniffing around the edges when impact players hit the market, they finally picked their spot and made the deal. And without completely changing the roster or throwing away an insane amount of draft picks. Yeah, yeah Necas left in the deal but even the best version of Necas ain't in Rantanen's league. And given how Necas' last two contract windows went, he wasn't re-signing here in 2026 anyway. Remember all those deals everybody dreamed up for Necas this summer? Yeah, this blows all that mess out of the water.

What about Hall? Fine. He can add some creativity to that second PP unit and maybe he helps KK out with playmaking on his line. He's turned into much more of a setup guy as he's aged. And that's fine. If it doesn't work out, then OK ... but it's unlikely to be that big a deal. He'll play a similar role to what he played in Boston a couple of years ago. He's still capable of that, I think.

From here, you've got 7 games before the 4 Nations break to let everybody settle. They can use the break to take the temperature of Rantanen's agent on an extension, but that's a secondary concern to figuring out how to max out the current roster. Win something meaningful now and that stuff takes care of itself

Lastly ... thank God we didn't end up with that a-hole Miller

Not so sure you'll want KK as his center. Time will tell.
Rantanen will almost certainly play with Aho so I'm not sure that matters even a little bit. They've played together Internationally in multiple tournaments and you'll want to get him comfortable as quickly as possible.

This is why I had concern

Rantanen With Mackinnon:
2549:16 minutes played
59.7gf%
55.6xgf%
57.2cf%

Rantanen W/O Mackinnon:
782:22 minutes played
42.9gf%
42.8xgf%
44.7cf%

He needs to play with better players that get what he is doing.

Oh ... on Necas.

I expect him to absolutely light it up in Colorado if they keep him on the wing. Not sure he fits with MacKinnon really, but he's more than capable of lighting a fire under Middelstadt. I think he fits that system really, really well.

How does Rantanan compare to Guentzel? Seems to have the skillset but also have much more dominant physical ability. Which is exactly the kind of player we needed to add to the top 6. Much harder to push this version of the Canes around with the Staal line and then Rants and Svetch it would seem.

They didn’t resign/keep Guentzel…. So why would they resign/keep Rantanan?

My sense is he’s a more complete player for what we need. Instead of smallish skill player.

It is going to be interesting to see how RBA and Daniels shake out the lines now. Rantanen can play center but generally hasn't. He is a +faceoff player who takes 5 draws a game even as a winger. He is 51% for his career, 53.3% this season. So if he ends up with KK as the center on the 2nd line, he can help with key faceoffs and when KK get's tossed from the circle (which is more than 50% of the time).

And then Taylor Hall?

So we could go:

Svech-Aho-Blake
Rantanen-KK-Hall
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Robinson-Roslovic-Jaaska

Flip Svech and Rantanen as desired. That 2nd line as I have it would be a physical nightmare to play against, not because they would out there hitting everyone, but go ahead and try to outmuscle that line in the corners. There will be a lot of juggling options, but I would think that Hall is going to be the 2nd line RW to start. Certainly though the coaches could just staple the new superstar with Aho, that would make sense to do.

Some miscellaneous stuff on Rantanen and Hall

* Neither of these guys have been penalty killers. Like, ever. Hall has averaged 8 seconds of SH TOI per game in his career. Which is a lot compared to Rantanen's 2 seconds per game.

* Shootouts? No help there. Rantanen is 8 for 27 (29.6%) Hall is 6 for 26 (23.1%) For perspective, Svech is 11 for 25 (44%) and Aho is 6 for 25 (24.0%)

No way they bring in Rants and bury him on a line with KK. He should play with Aho

Rantanen >> Guentzel
