Those in positions 9-24 will play in two-leg knockout playoffs round. The top 8 from this are the home side in the second leg.

And finally, as of now, these 12 teams will not advance any further in European football come the 2025 part of the calendar/Bottom 12 in CL after 5 rounds.png

First matches of Matchday #6 from December 10th

Pedestrian win for Liverpool to maintain the perfect start, on a PK by Mo Salah. Nice win for Villa after losing two one-goal leads, as they move to third currently. Leverkusen become the first side to score vs Inter to go second. And a big win for PSG over Salzburg when a loss would've largely killed their chances to advance.
BTW, for all the fuss about Inter's defensive posture prior to yesterday, Liverpool conceded in the third minute of Matchday #1 to Christian Pulisic and AC Milan. They've not conceded since then, scoring 13. That's 537 minutes across nearly six full matches.

Today's results see Barca up to second with a 3-2 win over Dortmund, a comfortable win for Arsenal, and Lille is up to 8th by beating Sturm Graz. Meanwhile, Man City slumped to another defeat and are sitting 22nd. Their next match is in Paris vs. PSG, currently 25th and out of Europe. One win in ten. Unbelievable! BTW, Tim Weah lofted in a great cross to Weston McKennie who scored Juve's second.

And here are the tables after Matchday #6. Top 8 through to Round of 16, 9-24 into two-leg playoff, 25-36 completely out of Europe for the year. If you'd asked me which English sides would be where they are, the only one I would have predicted would've been Arsenal third. Liverpool and Villa are well above where I thought they'd be, and City is much lower than what I thought.

Arsenal was flattered by the score, it was a closer match than that. They were wasteful in the first half, with Odegaard and Jesus both missing and were luck in early in the 2nd when Monaco just missed a tying goal wide. The Gunners took advantage of a blundered goal kick for their 2nd goal and a free kick in the 88th to wrap it up. But the 3 goals helped in the goal differential, they’re at +9.

Jeff, interested in where your mind is at due to the fact that because of our piss poor performance against Monaco, we have to smash Celtic if we want to get into the top eight?

Man City need a win and help to make the playoffs, after losing to PSG 4-2. They were ahead 2-0 and gave up the next 4 goals. It was an elimination game of sorts, PSG was below them in the table with 7 points. Man City host Brugge next week, after a big league match with Chelsea. Of the clubs at 10 points, Benfica is at Juventus, PSG is at Stuttgart (also at 10 points) and Sporting hosts Bologna.

Turmoil. My mind is in utter turmoil. Thanks

Especially since, against all logic, this Celtic team ... coached by an absolute idiot ... are actually enjoyable to watch.

A stark contrast to this Villa team who while coached by a very smart man, are an absolute slog to watch this season.
Duran has been the saving grace for most of the season ... and Rogers. But yeah, getting relatively little from Watkins and Bailey has taken a lot of the electricity out of things. That and all the injuries.

City's capitulation in that match was an utter shock. Maybe the new boys get them going again, though Khusanov looked shaky at the start of the match vs. Chelsea.

Liverpool needs a result vs PSV or Barca not to win to maintain the top position at the end. For a team that's scored so freely in the Prem, having only 15 in 7 matches in this competition (tied with Manchester City for 8th most) is puzzling. Then again, we've conceded just two: in the third minute of Matchday #1 to Christian Pulisic, and Jonathan David in the 62nd minute of Matchday #7 (secretly, as a CONCACAF supporter, it thrills me a bit that it's two CONCACAF guys who've been the only goal scorers).

So many Americans on PSV and Hirving Lozano, too. Uh oh! 😁

Well, Villa beat Celtic and took about a year off my life. I freaking hated watching that. Combined with a couple other results, that should put them in the top 8.

And Villa are in the top eight and my heart is at least five years older than it was at the start of the match. Some real deja vu from our last match with us starting off great (about as good as you can with two goals in the first six minutes) and then an injury to our back four and a baffling decision by Emery on how to adjust to it and watching the match turn and the other team immediately get back in it. Fortunately this time, we settled down in the second half and despite some heart damage for Ollie slipping on our absolutely horrible pitch on his penalty and a few great saves by Schmichael and ended up with a comfortable win by the end.

Schmichael deserved better. Stood on his head on the pitch where his Dad dominated for years and ends up giving up 4 goals. Again, the internal conflict watching that match did so much damage to my nervous system ... I'm gonna go watch something truly stupid to re-set my brain.

Europa was fun yesterday. Watched as team rose up and down the final table, but focused mostly on two matches: United vs FCSB and Roma vs Eintracht. Surprised that Roma had such a comfortable win. So did United, as it turned out. So here's their draw
