Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

We make this mistake all the time. When we hear about what they're asking, it's just an ask. They always go down from that. I think you can get Domi locked in at 3m if you go to 5 years. For a versatile guy that can play some center, that may be the best value out there for these depth forwards.

Roy 5.5m
Tanev 3.5m
Domi 3m
Brossoit 3m

Think that is pretty much it with regards to their cap space. Can't complain much if that's how she goes. Can't see them fitting both Bert and Domi tbh unless Bert accepts something ridiculous.

not that badly, judging by that proposal. who out there is going to be Domi's 8th NHL team and give him that kind of deal??

He’s literally never had a deal that long in his entire NHL career.

3 year ELC with Arizona
2 years x $3.15M with Montreal
2 years x $5.3M with Columbus
1 year x $3M with Chicago
1 year x $3M with Toronto

So I can understand where Domi’s coming from, wanting to finally lock in some term & stability. And I’d be fine with giving him term, but that AAV’s going to have to come down as a trade-off.

And circling back to your question—I have a hard time picturing another team swooping in and paying him 4 x 4.

5 years? ridiculous.

as for him being the best value, I sure hope not. Domi is as 1 dimensional as it gets.
3m for Domi throughout the life of that contract is likely to be equivalent (on average) to around 2.5m in this year's cap. It really isn't a huge commitment or risk.

But yes I think it's possible he also takes 3x3 or 3m for 4 years. 4x4 is just an ask. Not the lowest he'd accept.

Tavares ($11 mill) for Bert ($4), Domi ($3) and Tanev ($4) would be good.

Using our offseason space on those 3 would be underwhelming.
Horrible. Then you’re locked into those three for several years? One a journeyman who never gets retained, two a slow broken down power forward who did pretty much nothing last year, and a 35 year old defensive specialist who could be cooked at any moment.

How is long term commitment to those guys better than one year of Tavares? Fucking madness the stuff you guys say.

Not even worth watching next year if that’s what they do. Get at least one top D guy in Montour or Skjei, and a cheap Skinner, and cheap goalie. If you can clear junk like the 4th line guys out and make a good one year show me deal to whoever is left in the cold with no long term deal then do that too.

Agree they should trade Tavares so they have space to pick up one of the top d in addition to Roy

"did nothing last year"

Domi (28) 80gms, 9gls, 47pts
Bertuzzi (28) 80gms, 21gls, 43pts
Debrusk (27) 80gms 19gls 40pts
Apart from one good year, Bertuzzi does pretty much nothing every year. 20/40 is nothing. Domi is the personification of meh.

Only one guy has 30 goal pop in him (unlike consistent 9 goal Domi), is fast (unlike beat down Chevytuzzi), and is almost two years younger than both of them. And he’s coming off a down year.

The harping on Roy is actually starting to piss me off. Especially when I think Lilly could be better than him as soon as this year and they’re looking to dump him. For what, to pay this guy 2x more?

honestly, Domi lacks goalscoring and defence and isn't a difference-making physical presence either. I'm lukewarm on investing anything of substance there. at this point, he's an option but where on the list he ranks really depends on what the field is demanding.

the leafs are correct in allowing him and Bertuzzi to go to market, honestly. They have much bigger fish to fry in net and on the blueline.

if I had to pick one, I'd say Bertuzzi is more of what we need unless Marner is being traded for a non-forward core piece, in which case Domi's plus playmaking and ability to play the middle may be of greater need in spite of his lack of anything else.

Me too. For all the depth forwards on the market. But I don't think 3m is anything of substance.

Domi - 7 gp, 1 gl, 4pts
Bertuzzi - 7 gp, 1 gl, 4 pts
Tavares - 7 gp, 1 gl, 2 pts, $11 million
What happened to all those xg stats that said Tavares was basically our best player in most or all of those games? We focus only on raw playoff production now when none of them can score when it matters? Mitch is the same as Tavares and being run out of town, but we should be trying to bring middling junk like Domi and Bertuzzi back with raises and term?

lol you wanna pay $6 m for, by your own admission, "nothing".

craziness.
